I got this laptop (IBM ThinkPad) that i just formatted and i need to install windows 98 again. The problem is that it won't boot from cd-rom to install it. In bios there is no cd-rom choise in the start-up sequence. The cd-rom was working well before the format, so i really don't know what to do. I also tried to install dos and put on my cd when i'm in dos but it doesn't detect any cd-rom drive. What can i do about this?

Thx for your help

You need to obtain a Windows98 boot (floppy) disk with DOS CD-ROM drivers.

Boot to the disk, load the CD-ROM drivers, change the drive in the command prompt to the CD-ROM (usually E: in DOS with one partition on the hard drive) and type in setup

This is what worked for me.

In fact that is what i would have done but i just forget to tell you that i can't have the floppy disk and cd-rom on the laptop at the same moment because they are using the same slot. Would it work if i put the cd-rom drivers on the hard disk and i reboot with my cd-rom and install drivers in dos? If yes can you tell me more about these drivers, what is the file name and how do i load them up?

Thx

On the www.mesich.com web site in the `Howtos' there is a method to install windows with swappable drives.

I've been able to get into the installion of windows 98, yes the drivers for the cd-rom are working. But now i have another problem, the cd-rom is going crazy, sometimes he's reading fine and sometimes he's not able to read at all. Now i'm stuck at 6%.

There is a possibility that the CD-ROM drivers did not get properly installed. Also, are the IDE Primary and Secondary Controllers enabled in the BIOS?

Might also want to check into getting a CD-ROM cleaning kit at a local store.

NeophytE, boot with the CD installed, but don't run Windows Setup from the CD.

Instead, copy the Win98 directory from the CD onto the HardDrive, then run Setup from the HD. This will eliminate the read/write erros that you are experiencing.

Mesich.com also has a "How-To" regarding copying the CD to the HD.

HTH
