Hi, fixing up my old W95 machine to give to a friend. Any of these anyone can answer would be very appreciated:
1. Windows Library Update: checked for any available MS updates that were missed. Did not download this one, because I searched out all the .dlls that MS lists as included in it and saw that the PC already has higher versions of all of them (except Mfc42u, which is supposed to be for NT only so don't why it's listed... Could get a slightly higher version from my XP PC if indeed needed). So is it ok/better to skip the update? Or maybe that is what it was supposed to fix?? I just don't want to over-write anything with older stuff, or add to the ton of surely-unnecessary dlls already on it.
1a. Conversely, sometimes I see advice to delete any older versions of the typical (meaning MFC?) .dlls. Is that correct?
2. Java to go with, as far as best possible security? I see everywhere that Sun's is better now, but I read that there were plenty of security probs with versions lower than 1.4.x. So between the major players, looks like I could get the last compatible MS version, 3810 (and it is relatively small, which would be good) or Sun's J2RE 1.3.17 (much bigger I think). Note, I already have both MS JVM version 1.0 (file version 4.79.X or something like that), and Sun's J2RE 1.3.0c on the machine. Maybe the improvement in security with either upgrade isn't even worth sitting through the download? If so, should I just uninstall one of them instead (like to free up space)? Which?
3. DUN: I upgraded from 1.3 to 1.4, but then when reading dialup/modem efficiency tips at a site of unknown expertise, it said that if you go to Control Panel > Network and the Advanced tabs of your dialup adapters don't have packet size settings, the update is not installed. Is that true? DUN 1.4 shows in Add/Remove progs, and I do have a packet size setting on my dialup VPN adaptor's Advanced tab, just not on the plain dialup one. (I did not uninstall the original, "base" Windows DUN through Add/Remove > Windows Setup, if that was a step you're supposed to do before installing the update...)
Thanks lots for any help!

Recommend an excellent tool from windows 98 that "Steve Easton" has written for windows 95. Can be a real life saver.
It's Scanreg/restore. The website is...Just trying

Hi, yes as a matter of fact I do have scanreg on this system already. (Glad to have it for the restore capability, but the system sure does not like it when I use the optimize or repair commands). Anyway thanks, tips are great. But still hoping someone wanders in to address my actual questions. Youze guys know all this stuff, where are ya? ;o)

1) If another version is required, they can be downloaded readily enough - I've got 'Mfc42u' on my 95A machine, so something must've needed it.
1a) I've never heard that. It doesn't hurt to leave them, and perhaps older programs will expect an older version.. not positive
2) Not something I was ever terribly concerned about - that machine reports Java 1.3 (installed with Opera6)
3) Shouldn't matter - DUN1.3 is a recommended update for Win95, 1.4 is more of the same, but with enhanced security (as I recall)
Other Win98 programs that are a good addition:
msconfig
SFC
Science is built up with facts, as a house is with stones. But a collection of facts is not more a science than a heap of stones is a home

Thanks jboy! That is good news, that none of those are any big thang (tho, once I give it to my friend he will have no hope of ever doing any fix-ups himself that may turn out to be needed... will be a miracle if he can even successfully update the security progs on it. I want to give it to him with everything set in "Better safe than sorry" mode). I just start to get so into this stuff and examining all possibilities once I start. But am happy to cease and desist where acceptable/advisable.
Oh and msconfig -- I think you may have been on a thread where that was suggested to me before, when the W95 PC in question here suddenly became my 'production'-- and only -- machine, after I killed my laptop with a glass of water. Fortunately now I have others and am just fixing up the old beast to give away. (Doesn't stop me from taking it too far however.) Anyway, I did indeed scoop up msconfig, ME scandisk & defrag, etc. from that thread.
Thanks again. Oh hey, like Columbo there is always "Just one more thing..." Any opinion on whether I should bother trying to get power management working (Windows doesn't handle it right so would try BIOS settings)? I would only want to do so if that is easier on the machine, not the pocketbook. If APM only reduces power costs forget it, I think I've heard it can also be harder on a machine and I want to focus on having it set to last the longest and perform the best for my friend.
