OS: Windows 98 SE
CPU/Ram: AMD 1300 256 Mg RAM
Comment:

Just installed Win98 SE on a new 40 Gig Maxtor in a new AMD 1300 system.
The Bios said ~40 Gig. Fdisk said 39,*** Megs and so did FORMAT. So far so good. When 'doze was installed, and I right clicked on C: in My Computer, the Properties said 3.9 Gig!!
Going back and checking Fdisk again showed just under 40 Gigs. What gives?
The only thing I can possibly think of is that I used a Win95 OSR2 boot disk to start the computer and access the CD-ROM for the installation, but OSR2 had FAT32 anyway, just like 98. That shouldn't have done it I wouldn't think. Any geniuses?
Greg

In option 4 of fdisk what does it say under 'usuage'? Fdisk may see the entire 40 gig but it's possible only 10% of it got partitioned.

Hi

When did microsoft fix fdisk to it see drives as large as 40G. (I don't think 95 fdisk could see drives that large.)

Only this year fdisk has been fixed to see drives correctly that were larger than 64G

Completely separate (and not connected to your problem ) is the bios, earlier computers, had a 32G limit at some stage. I mention this so that it is not confused with fdisk problems.

Fdisk said the entire 40 Gig was utilized, but I wiped the entire drive, re-FDISKed it with the Windows 98SE CD, and re-formatted, and now it sees the entire 40 Gig.
Evidently the Win95OSR2 FDISK can't properly handle a 40 Gig drive, even though it says it has done the job properly.
I learned my lesson.
Thanks for all the help!
Greg

There was a similar thread a few weeks ago where a 40 gig drive was only partitioned as 4 gig. That person also repartitioned and formatted and got it back. I wonder if he had used a 95 version of fdisk also.

Thanks for the update.
