How can I make windows 98 register my 30 gig HD as 30 gigs instead of 6. Do I need to partition something or update something? Walk me through, I need baby steps....:)
Email if you can. I might not check the site for a while

Well If you bother to check back and find your post , please add some machine details info as per instructions at the top of the page.

The mind readers quit finding that info for us, and there is no generic 'one size fits all' PC setup.

yes, searching the internet is half the fun
as far as what to do.

If you want to resize the parttion you'll most likely need a third party software.
such as partition magic or system commander.
and they cost.
you be better off using the money to buy a new drive to copy the drive to while you fdisk the first hard drive.

If you don't mind starting over then just repartition it with Fdisk.

or now that I think of it you might just have to add a extended partition and logical drive.

having partitions in my opinion is a good idea.

some links
Upgrading Links

as if can't seem to get anywhere with fdisk
you might try a more drastic measure and goto your hard drives website for utilites.

I would get the utilites even if your not planning to use them right now.
That way you have them.

When I boot the computer, it shows it as a 30 gig HD. I have a 6 gig HD I also installed. So I use both. My computer is a celeron 400 with 196 Ram. Windows 98. not SE. I went to Maxtor's website. It is a diamond Max Plus 45. 30.7 gig HD. I couldnt find anything on there and contacted them but I have to wait for a response. I guess the bios recognizes it cuz its there at the beginning.

you can get powermax to test
just don't use the low level format unless you want to start over.

also you can use Fdisk to view partitions
this might give you a better idea of what's going on

Try this: Go to the Device Manager and remove the drive. Then reboot. Windows will redetect the drive.

I dont have the installation disk. It didnt come with one. I think thats my problem in the first place. As of right now it just says its a generic Ide type 47 Hard Drive. Wouldnt it just do that again if I dont have the disk?

* For any BIOS using the CHS (normal, or large) translation mode,
the maximum cylinder value is 16,383. The CHS mode limits the BIOS
to being able to address a maximum drive size of 8.4 larger than
8.4 GB the BIOS must support the Logical Block Address (LBA) mode.
LBA uses the MAXLBA value as the addressing method to access the
cylinders on drives larger than 8.4 GB. Both the mother board and
the Operating System (OS) must support extended interrupt 13 (Xint
13) in order to prepare, format and access information on any drive
larger than 8.4 GB.

In newer computer systems, the BIOS (CMOS) settings include an "Auto"
entry. If your system supports it, select "Auto" and enable the "LBA"
(Logical Block Addressing) Mode. Then let the system auto detect the
drive parameters. If your system does not support LBA, then you may
require a BIOS Upgrade, an Extended BIOS EIDE adapter card, or Maxtor's
Free "MaxBlast Plus" HDD Installation Software.

~ The fields LZ (Landing Zone) and WP (Write
Pre-compensation) are not used by Maxtor drives and the
values may be either 0 or the values set by the BIOS.

The hard drive passed all the tests in MaxBlast. The entire computer sees that is a 30 gig HD but Windows does not. All the specs reported above are appreciated but do not help. Am I gong to have to lose all my storage on the hard drive to get this missing space?

Windows sees partitions,
Fdisk /status reports on space used by partitions and UN-partitioned free space .

21% of 29298 megs is 6 gigs.

You have a 6 gig partition and 23195 megs of UN-partitioned free space. Until you partiton and format that space , windows will ignore it.

yes,
use fdisk
skip creating a primary partition and just create and extended partition
and logical drive.

http://www.hardwarecentral.com/hardwarecentral/tutorials/42/1/

then you should be able to format within windows

you might have to remove drives and CD drives in the device manager in safe-mode.
or at least make sure your CD drive letter is changed.

or problems may arise
