Hi! I am working on my husbands friends computer and I am having trouble getting it to boot. I turn it on and all the power comes on then it stops and just has the ASPIRE screen. Once it gave me 3 LONG beeps and then nothing again. What is going on, please I need help fast.

If you can get the mother board info(download Belarc Advisor) from ZDNET.com,you can go to google and get the info on the beep codes. Other than that you need to give a little more info on system specs before we can research it for you.

I don't know what all you need to know but I will tell you what I can. This computer is running WIN 98. It was made by Aspire, with a Pentium II, The CD ROM will not even respond when the computer is turned on. The floppy drive worked once but that was after the PC had been turned on for 20 minutes and stuck at the ASPIRE page. The light stays on for about 20 minutes like the system is busy, then goes off and still stuck at the same screen. I can not download anything for his computer because I can't even get it started. It gave me 3 long beeps one time (I have booted it about 10 times now) and then nothing again. What are all the specs you need? Thanks for your help.

will it boot from a write protected startup disk, the hard drive on it could have a virus. you can download a dos based virus scanner to run on it from fprot.

There's some beep codes explained here:

It's a good idea to clean the memory and cpu slots.
You have a hardware and not a software problem. Reinstalling windows wouldn't help even if you could get that far.

No, It booted from one (floppy) one time and that is it. And the CD ROM is not responding at all.

if you keep getting 3 long beeps
depending on the bios-it can be the memory(ram) is bad or needs to be reseated, or the processor is bad, or is overheating.
found those on google, and there were a few more for 3 long beeps.

I have looked at that site, and it says that maybe a keyboard or keyboard card error, but it did it only that once and then no more. I have rebooted several time since then and nothing. Thanks. If you have any more info I am all ears.

have you gone into the bios and checked to see if the drives are configured properly? And also check the boot order. I have a really old acer I think to enter the bios it was ctrl-alt-esc but I may be wrong... You could look that up somewhere to find how to enter the bios if it doesn't post that info

Somthing is not connected or comminicating right. try disconnecting the CD rom then boot, if nothing next the hard drive, etc. till it boots then try reconnecting 1 by 1 till it does not boot anymore then disconnect the last thing you connected. thats is causing the problem. also try making sure all jumpers are set right. somthing is cause some type of conflict. if once every thing is hooked up right, then if still no go then try using diffrent cables.
hope this helps.

I once had the same sort of problem on a friends compaq there was a confilct with the USB controller.
Have a look in the bios and disable (or enable) the USB controller, reboot and see what happens. Also if you have any USB devices disconnect then and see what happens.

If this keyboard has the AT style connector on it "about 1/2" in diameter" and not the PS/2 connector it is possible that you have a switchable keyboard, if this is the case turn it over and look for a small switch it will be marked as PC XT or PC AT or even XT AT
switch it to the XT or AT position , and then try to boot it again , if this is not the case , try a different keyboard.
