I'm trying to hang a second 20g hard drive and it is reconized in the BIOS, however Windows will not find this Drive. I have tried different settings with the jumpers on the drives with no change. I just can't put my finger on what is missing. HELP

'My computer' will not show a drive unless it's partitioned nor will it assign a drive letter to it. Once partitioned it should be seen there but you'll need to format it before you can use it.

I don't think that Windows will recognize unformatted partitions either. If it's not FAT or FAT32, Windows won't see it (such as NTFS or Linux partitions).

There are two theories to arguing with women. Neither one works.

Yeah, a non dos partition won't be assigned a drive letter so it wouldn't show up in 'my computer' but I think a HD with a dos partition will show. However I always do partitioning and formatting in dos so I can't say for sure. Maybe Terry will let us know, if that was the problem.

As long as the disk is recognized by the bios, from within windows fdisk will see it, and any dos partitions will be listed in Explorer or My Computer.
It's a good day when you learn something

Daveincaps was correct. After running fdisk and creating a dos partition, then running a format command the drive was usable.

I am also trying to put a second hard drive in. It's a WD-1600jb: Western Digital 160gig. It's showing up in the bot record, BIOS, and "device manager". I read most of the posts and people have been saying to format and partition, but the problem is it's already partitioned and was used in an xbox. I need the files that are on it (145gigs worth) to do some resourcing and FTPing. Any help to go around formating and loosing so many files that are needed?

98 has problems with partitions larger than about 127 gig. However, you may be able to attach it as a slave in a 98 system and access the files that way. But that will only work if the partition is FAT16 or FAT32. I'm not sure how the xbox HD is configured.
You may have better luck if you attach it to an XP system.

I'm using XP Pro and the 160gig that I need to get the files off of to FTP is a FAT32, I believe. It was partitioned with an external program called Evo-X Auto Installer (Partitioner) whish uses an .xbe (xbox execution program). I tried to put the 160 in my comp with XP aand it detects it, but when I go to the manage option by right clicking on My Computer and going to Storage Devices it will let me assign a drive letter. But then if I try to go into My Computer and open it a message pops up saying "Cannot open file: Invalid Parameter"

I'm not familiar with any of that stuff but it sounds like evo-x may be some kind of drive overlay or may modify the boot sector of the drive.
You may want to start a thread in the gaming forum. There may be people there who are more knowledgeable.

Thanks for all the help and everything you have put up with me. I'll try a new thread there and see waht happens.
