I reformatted win98 several weeks ago. However, I think I wiped the drivers for the visual side of thing as I only have 16 color and some programs will not run without 256 color. What do I need to download and install and where do I find it? I have an upgraded pentium 11 mainboard bx pro 100mhz. It had perfect graphics before I reformatted so I know that it has the capabilities to get 256 colours, but obviously need to install or upgrade something. Can anyone advise?

Thanks

What does it say in Device Manager for Display Adaptor ?
Did you try going into
Control Panel / Display / Settings
and changing the Colors and Screen Resolution to 256 colors and 800 x 600 screen size.
If you have drivers installed, the settings should change and stick.
If the settings cannot be changed, then you will need to install video card drivers.
Do you know the make and model of your video card ?

If you don't know what display adaptor you have, this may help:

Subject: Display

The following may indicate what type of Display Driver you have:
Start>Programs>Accessories>System Tools>System Information>(+)Components>Display

Be patient and eventually it may show the model of the Display Adaptor plus much other info you may not want or understand.
[You will get less information by: Right Click My Computer > Properties> Device Manager> (+) beside Display Adaptors]

Go to the manufacturer's site and download the latest drivers. Or go to:

Driver Forum

You should be able to get it there. Bear in mind that you will still be limited by the Monitor hardware (picture tube) and the display adaptor (Video board). If you cannot do better with the latest available video driver, you will have to spend some money.

To inspect/modify your display properties, go to:

Start>Settings>Control Panel>Display>Settings

Note 'Screen Area' and 'Colors'
If you can change the settings in "Colors' and 'Screen Area', you are in business. If not, you will need to buy a newer monitor and/or Display adaptor and latest Video Driver.

When you formatted you removed the drivers for the video card, or on board video. You must reinstall the drivers for your video card then you will be OK.
