2 PC network & Cross over cable

Please correct me if I'm wrong: if I'm connecting only 2 PC without using a hub, I MUST use a cross over cable instead of a normal one.
But how do I tell the difference between a cross over cable and a straight cable?

correct. No hub, just crossover cable. The cable should have the type printed on the sheathing. You can convert straight cable to crossover cable by tying a knot in the middle of it. (hee heee!)

Hey MoMo, you can tell the difference by looking at the pin-out of the ends. hold both ends together in the same direction. If they are both identical (colors) then its a straight. if the color coding is different on each end, then you have a crossover. SteveL

you can use either.. i'd actually rather get a cheap hub incase you decide to expand later.. but crossover or hub will work fine.

Be aware tho, if you hold the cable ends up side by side, facing the same way, that there is a third option, the colors will mirror each other. You don't want that cable either, that's a roll over or console cable.
