Hi suzieQ, sidney, hi everyone,I would say you've got a spyware or trojan!
Run Trend Micro online Scan (freeware)
Then update Ad-Aware before a good scan or run Spybot Search and Destroy (freeware)
Then run Anti-Trojan 5.5.420 (14-day trial)Have a good day,
Gérard from Paris, France

Hi suzieQ, sidney, hi everyone
I'll assume you are talking about your computer at home, which isn't connected to any other computers at your place.
My first thought is that you have File and Printer sharing enabled in your Network Neighborhood properties. If you aren't connected, as I assume, to other computers at your place than disable File and Printer sharing.
Right click on the Network icon on your desktop and select Properties, if there is a File and Printer sharing button on the first tab click on it. See if the checkboxes in the new window are checked, if so uncheck them both. Click OK twice, reboot and see if your issue is solved.

Hi suzieQ, sidney, Gérard, hi everyone
suzieQ, you are so right. It's been to long...
I'm happy to see that I could be of assistance to you. :-)You do know, you don't need File and Printer sharing to hook up your printer to your (standalone) computer, do you?
One only needs File and Printer sharing to make files/folders/drives and printer(s) available to other computers connected to yours. As always you are very welcome, and thank you for getting back with us so promptly.
Greetz,
The Count

No I didn't know that I'm having an awful time hooking up my Epson 580 printer I got the printer when I bought my computer 3 years ago it was working until I ran out of ink a couple of months later, after that I couldn't get it to work so I shelf it. I have tried twice since then with new ink cartriges still same messages "error in communication check plugs". The place I bought the computer at went out of business 2 months after I bought it ( convenient).I paid to much to begin with but I was a newbie and it has been working alright with some extra cost at a computer shop. So I guess my best bet is to but a new printer it would be cheaper than buying cartridges 80.00 that I can't use. Oh well who said life was fair.suzieQ

Hi suzieQ, sidney, Gérard, hi everyone
suzieQ, correct me if I'm wrong. With the Epson 580, I assume you are referring to a Epson Stylus Color 580 USB printer.
I happen to own one of those myself. :-)
Currently not installed, ran out of ink...If I remember correct you, you have formatted and reinstalled your computer once or twice this year. And as you have formatted and reinstalled the computer, you have wiped out the installed drivers for the printer. Therefor after reinstalling Windows, you need to reinstall the drivers for the printer. And the latter is the "tricky" part, or the part where the snack hides out.
To properly install the printer and it's drivers, you need to first unplug the printer (disconnect it from the computer).
Then you need to install the drivers, which where provided with the printer, and when that's done after a reboot you can reconnect the printer to the computer. Windows will detect the printer, and act like it is installing the drivers for the printer. If you go to the properties for the printer, you should have a option (Wizard) to replace your ink cartridges. You probably also will need to re-run the calibration option.
If you don't have the drivers (CD-ROM), anymore, you can download them here:
Printer Driver v6.0cA

On the left under Downloads & Support, you can also find the manual and troubleshooting FAQ's.Hope this helps.
Greetz,
The Count
