NO.
Simply NO.
The clock speed is way too less to handle games that are even a couple of years old let alone modern ones.
Most newer games requires the addtional functionality of P3 and P4 or equivalent AMD besides the raw processor speed. Nowadays, a good video card is as important or even more important that plain processor speed. You may be able to manage NFS 2, NFS 3 or maybe Age of Empires (at the most!)
This machine will be able to do decent word processing and internet surfing... in today's world...no gaming.
I cant but help get this teeny weeny feeling that this is a trick question....

Depends on what you are playing. It would be good for Frogger.
http://m-i-s-t.tripod.com/other/entertainment/exes/frogger.exe

http://www.dosgamesarchive.com about 200 DOS games available, Demo, Shareware, etc.
Format hard drive to FAT16, max size 2GB and install OpenDOS 7.01 Lite:
ftp://ftp.kando.hu/pub/OpenDOS/
it is free for personal use, you will need a Sound Blaster or compatible Sound Card with DOS drivers. DOS software will detect Graphics, though will need a CD driver if you want to use one, and a mouse driver from http://cutemouse.sourceforge.net.

hey kailas, i am currently writting this on a 133MHZ machine. BTW, i play age of empires WITH NO PROBLEMS AT ALL on this computer. yes, AGE OF EMPIRES. p3 and p4s aren't required to play games. a lot of games are 233MHZ minimun, and a 166 with MMX is equivalent to more than that, when performing 3d things on it. The technology behind MMX is quite advanced, as it is another code specifically written for 3d apps, games, and graphics. it is a seperate code from the normal intel architecture, and the normal intel architecture can oly handel 32bit stuf, MMX is designed to handle 64-bit things, therefore doubling the speed of you processor when performing actions where the technology can be used. Then, along to all that, add on direct x technology by microsoft (which is used in nearly every 3d game out there). Direct X creates a direct bridgefrom the 3d game\whatever to the MMX\processor and video card giving you optimal performance.

oh, and x86, i'm not about to install dos on a computer. It's not ONLY going to be a gaming computer, it's gonna be my personal computer.

AU, I know the MMX incorporates special instruction sets for gaming. I also know several games CAN run on your 166Mhz /32 MB ram.
BUT I was speaking of today's standards where in games are written to make use of a video card. Your mother board will not have an AGP slot in all probability. A PCI graphics card will not be of much help.retank:
which quake are u talking abt?
quake 1 will run on just about any pc,
quake 2 MAY,
quake 3..... LOL !Happy computing and gaming.
-Kailas.

You cna set up a dual boot and the games cost absolutely nothing except your Internet costs.
Though with W98SE installed you should be able to play most games originally written for W95.

let's be careful not to overrate mmx. Sure maybe an P1 mmx166 is better than a P1 200 without mmx, but every cpu since the 233 had mmx built in. A game that says it needs 233 minimum, needs mmx by implication, as there were no 233 or higher machines that were non-mmx.

well, it's still a good PC, right? And i'm not so sure about the minimum requirments for games including th power of MMX. I have played the sims on this lousy 133MHZ. It ran pretty slowly, but it was still playable. i built the biggest house using this computer. and if the sims runs at 233 min., then i doubt it's including MMX, if a 133 can play it ith difficulty, WITHOUT MMX. I think the requirements are raw processing speed. And i am also prolly gonna overlock it, as the bios supports it.

You need a 2GHZ machine (at least), with a high quality video card to have a lot of the newer 'action' games play satisfactorily, AU.

The easiest way is to look on the side of the box containing the game and see what the system requirements are. But the only place you're likely to find any able to run on that machine is the discount bin.

The 166-MMX is a Socket 7 processor. You can probably go up to a 233-MMX on that motherboard. I recently picked up six 233-MMX's for $5 (US) each. Look around on eBay (or in the local trash bins).

357,
He's talkin' a laptop here. See:
http://computing.net/cpus/wwwboard/forum/6595.html
http://computing.net/cpus/wwwboard/forum/6573.html
I believe he's asking too much here.

SkipCox....OIC....It always helps when the poster gives enough information to receive an accurate reply.
Generally speaking, ANY LAPTOP is a poor gaming machine. The graphics pretty much suck.
Unless you're talking about Freecell & such.
Dave

a good gaming machine?? please, stop. im gonna die laughing. by gaming do you mean doom?? if so than yeah. i wouldnt install win95 if i was you, i would go dos. that way you can pull all the power possible out of the processor, with a computer that slow youre gonna need all the ticks you can get.

AU, I can see you are in love with your machine. Go ahead and fantasize all you want.
The fact is the 166Mhz WAS a good gaming machine when it was introduced. NOT NOW
if you wish to believe you have the best(est) processor on earth, go ahead and believe so.YOU NEED A VIDEO CARD IN A PC TO CALL IT A GAMING MACHINE. YOUR MOBO WILL NOT EVEN HAVE AN AGP SLOT.
i suspect you are pulling our legs with the post, a 166 Mgz being called a gaming machine...
so what if it has MMX, all processors upward of 233Mhz have it, and the 500Mhz + AMDs have an equivalent.Happy Gaming.
-Kailas Shastry

A lot of games nowadays still have minimums of 300MHZ. this laptop is overclockable to 290Mhz.i know it's not the best computer on earth, but you'd be surprised at what the right stuf and an overclockable PC can do. with the right tweaks, It CAN play games, and not just dos games. And i AM looking around for video cards for it, even though it's a laptop. don't underestimate the power of old pcs, and dont over-estimate newer PCs. a p3 is just as good 4 games as a p4.

My Dell Inspiron A7000LT will not play most games published in the last 3 years.
System Credentials:
PII366
256Mb RAM
6.4 Gig HDD
DVD ROM
8Mb ATI Rage Pro AGP 2X Video Card
15" XGA TFT Active Matrix Display
ESS Maestro 2 Audio Card
Windows Me
Direct X 7The cut off point on gaming on my machine is about QuakeII. Most newer games drop frames, won't render 3D properly and so forth. Why? Video card just won't support DirectX 8...video card slow and low on memory...processor power inadequate...system bus slow...HDD slow...66Mhz memory.
This was a $4000 laptop new and was the best of the best. FOUR years ago!
Development on this machine and yours stopped when it was sold. Software development (games) jumps forward in leaps and bounds leaving this old stuff way behind.
If you were really trying to play any games on this 166 you'd already know all this.
"this laptop is overclockable to 290Mhz"
bullshirt
"a p3 is just as good 4 games as a p4."
more pure bullshirt
Where'd you come up with this stuff. If you are going to feed us this crap do some research first and at least make it sound plausible.
LOL
Skip

SkipCox, yes LOVLs
(laughing out very loud)
LOLhow do we convience our man AU his poor old 166Mhz (WITH HIS FAV. MMX) is not a gaming machine in today's defn of the term 'gaming machine'
AU:
there are people here on this forum who have worked not with your 'modern powerful' 166Mhz, but 80286, 80386 (i doubt u know what it is) all way upto 3+ Ghz machines.http://computing.net/windows95/wwwboard/forum/144785.html
Please dont insult their knowledge with your tales of fantasy.
Overclock to 290 Mhz???
do you know the first step to overclocking is cooling??
where on earth will you attach extra fans INSIDE the laptop??
These are just SOME limitations u will face.IF YOU ARE SO CONVIENCED THAT YOURS IS A GAMING PC, WHY ON EARTH POST ON THIS FORUM AND BOTHER US ALL ????

Hi folks,
Don't usually rag on anyone like this but, this kid just does not get the message. Look through his other posts (he's all over the place) as some are pretty entertaining.
