You need to install the driver for your video adapter. You are using the 'Standard' adapter and it is very limited.

The first thing you need to do is to go into the Windows device manager by right clicking on 'My Computer' and from the menu that appears select 'Properties' in the window that appears click on the 'Device Manager' tab. In the list of hardware in your computer double click on 'Display Adapter' if it says 'Standard VGA' (or something just like it) then you don't have the right driver for your video card, then comes the hard part finding out what kind of video card you have and getting the proper driver. In the Device Manager if the video card has a yellow exclamation mark icon beside it then you have a memory address or IO port conflict with another device within your computer. Then double click on your video card to bring up the Device Properties and there you can change the settings. If the Device Manager shows more than one video card then click on one to select it and click on the 'Remove' button, do this for each video card shown in the Device Manager and when they are removed close the Device Manager and reboot when prompted so that Windows can properly detect and configure the video card.

Yes, that's the reason. If your video is onboard you'll need to go to the motherboard manufacturer's site to fine the correct drivers--if you don't have the original disk. If it's an add-on card you'll probably need to open the case and look at the card for manufacturer, model #, chipset type--things like that.
Post back with the info if you can't figure it out.

Hi Ashley, what type of PC did you buy and is it brand new? This may help in finding your display adapter

If it is a new computer purchased at a store then you could take it back to them to fix. If it is not brand new but is 'new to you' then everyone here will help you work through it. Just be sure to answer the questions fully and to let us know what happens. There is also some free software that you can download that can tell you some stuff about your computer that might be helpful if you cannot otherwise figure out some of the required info.
