1 long to short beeps

hi, i have a compaq deskpro pc and just lately its not working properly. It just beeps when i turn it on and the screen stays blank. There is one long beep and then two short. It started straight after i installed a modem. I've removed the modem but it still does it. I dont know the bios because i cant get the screen on. I have a nvidia geforce 2 graphics card. Thanks Anthony
