Hi,
I have been having a problem with getting a blue error screen for awhile now (not all the time, and not when I use Netscape). I have a HP computer, with WIN 98 SE. I have I.E. 6 downloaded, but it seemed to work fine and I can't relate my problems to this.
I ran a systems scan (the one that came with the computer, in systems tools) and it came up with 2 files "missing or corrupted".
I've been told the user.exe one is most important. I've been trying to replace it from the restoration CDs(2) that came with the computer. Not matter how I try, a box comes up saying "file cannot be found".
I found a website with a download of user.exe, downloaded it to a floppy disk (virusscanned it) But,it said it is for WIN 98. I want to verify (before I risk messing it up further)if this is the same as I would use for WIN 98 SE, or does it actually have to say "SE" with it?
Nobody I've asked seems to have the answer to this.
I looked all over the MSN website and can't find anything that would be a download of the user.exe file (for WIN SE, or even WIN 98 for that matter) that I could replace mine with.
I'm still fairly new to computers so want to learn all I can about doing this before I try something.
The problem (blue screen)only happens occasionally and when it does, I use Netscape, which I also have.
But, I prefer I.E. as a default browser.
Thanks,
Carrie

Carrie, If you're not getting any error messages regarding user.exe file DON'T try to repace it. System File Checker reports this file as being corrupt or missing often when it indeed is not. Read the Microsoft Article link under my name for information on this. I honestly beleive that your user.exe is not corrupt and replacing it with the wrong version could cause your computer not to boot at all.

It sounds like your two restoration disks do not actually contain the Windows operating system.
Find the user.exe file on your system. Right click on it and see if the created and modified dates are 23 April 1999 22:22:00
In the version tab see if it is 4.10.2222
If these two agree then click on my name and email me - I can send you that particular file.

And if you DO receive this file in the mail, don't open it.
You don't know Derek from a hole in the ground. (no offense Derek). This is one way that Trojans or a virus can be introduced into another system!
As well, if User.exe were really corrupted, your system would be generating errors continually.

To Eh?
I thought I was well known enough in these parts, but sure, I understand your point and have to admit it makes sense (have stopped sulking now).
To Carrie.
Let's put it another way then:
If you still wish to persue this matter determine the date/time/version of user.exe on your system, then use that information to ensure you get the right file from whatever source you know you can trust.
