Do a search in the Registry for "NoIDE" >no quotes< and see if it turns up an entry. If so then change the value from 1 to 0 (that'd be a zero). Then reboot.

You could also try going in Safe Mode and deleting any ghost entries from device Mangler.

Just a thought

I got exactly the same problem, the same day.
I've done a lot of investigation, spent hours
on support lines, tried all sorts of things.
For me, the IDE controller will simply not
accept the Sony CDRW. The Microsoft Knowledge
Base has some ideas to try - in particular, check if your IDE controller is one listed as having problems with serialization - in :
http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q151/9/11.asp?LN=EN-US&SD=gn&FR=0.

Well, I've fixed this by going into the BIOS
and disabling the secondary master (the CD Writer), then windows picks it up ok. Strange, but true.
