I have Windows 98 SE running on a 20 gig HDD, The first half(8gigs)
is drive c: and the second half is drive d: Is that two partions? I
think I deleted one, because the second half(12gigs) doesn't show up
in my computer. I tried to fix the problem by adding a second HDD
(which is my old hdd 365MB) as slave to the 20gig one, and I installed
windows 95 on it, but then it rewrote the boot record of my drive c:,
so then i could only boot into dos. I then formated my 365MB HDD and
added windows 98 SE to it, Installed it as master, and my 20 gig as
slave. It workes out ok(that's how i got onto the net the write this
post), but Now how do I get to boot off my 20 gig HDD without loosing
any of my files? I really need my old outlook express back E-mails-
do i just copy the whole "outlook express" folder from program files,
and replace the one on my 365MB HDD? or would that totally mess up my
registry?
I totally messed up my computer, and i'm getting desperate... can
someone HELP!?

You need MBR Work http://www.terabyteunlimited.com/utilities.html .
But you may have already destroyed the old info by overwriting it ,
good luck anyway .

Put everything back the way it was originally and do a windows install (over) on the original c: drive. That should restore your system.
Do not try to install multiple Win9x systems on the same machine unless you know exactly what you are doing.
It's VERY tricky.

Jesus you did stuff it up. Can I ask how you managed to accidentaly delete a partition? that isn't usally something that happens by accident.
I'd reccomend a full Format to fix everything up, though you'll loose any files you may have wanted, but of course you've got them backed up on a floppy dont you?

Your PC probably is an older modle. Those older BIOS can support only up to 8Gig Hard drive. You need upgrade your BIOS. Go to your New hard drive manufacture web page's tech support to download supporting software.

You spoke nothing of FDISC Did you partition the drives? If not you have no boot sector on "C" Adding a drive changed all of the BIOS values for the drive letters. Also if you're BIOS did not recognize and set the drive parameters, you have a chaotic system in search of instruction.Go to BIOS and see if the drive parameters are set EXACTLY as they are listed (Especially on the added drive) These should be on the drive somewhere.HOWEVER!!!!!!!!! FDISC will have destroyed your data PERMANENTLY!! Format will not permanently destroy the data if you have not used the system (that is rewrtten to the harddisc)Feel free to send more info!

I tried to install windows 98 SE again on it, so i would boot off the CD-ROM, but then the install would say: "Setup cannot continue: Windows already detected on your computer." so i am tring to uninstall windows... is there a way to to it from the dos prompt?
The hard drive does boot, but when it tries to go into windows it says: "Missing Himem.sys"

If U want rid of windows boot from a clean floppy disk and do a deltree c:\windows or whatever your %Windir% is . U will need the deltree command as well as the boot files on the floppy . U can also rename your windows directory instead of deleting it - like 'ren c:\windows olddos'. Then when you go to re-install RTFS and do not accept the old path , tell setup to install in c:\windows or whatever you choose .

I put an old Western Digital as a slave with my Seagate. When I partioned the Western Digitial, the Seagate got partioned also. What a mess!

What you really need to do is to download the software to partion and format your 20G hard drive from the website of its manufacturer. Seagate, for example, provides free software that will overcome the BIOS problem and get you your full 20 gigs. The download makes a special bootable diskette for you.
