In some way I have lost the "You've got mail"
greeting when I go online. How do I get it back? I've gone to Con. Panel/ Sounds and its not listed. Nor am I able to assign any sound as a "got mail " greeting. Can you tell me stept-by-step how to proceed. Also, if these instructions be sent to me by e-mail, please do. Thank you.

You can uninstall AOL SW and reinstall it, if you really need the sound.

Open media player then, choose open, then the browse button. Follow this path, and open the file to see if it plays, if not, I'll email it to you.
C:\America Online 5.0\welcome.wav
Or go directly to the file & dbl click it.

I think an uninstall of AOl and use of a different ISP would fix it, hehe

This is so easy to do. Go to your control panel/sounds. Click on the new mail/then click browse. Now you will have to go to C:/aol/sounds/you've got mail.wav. Click open or ok. Not sure which it uses on that. Now the next sound if you want more will come up from that same box. I don't use aol but I took the sounds. I installed it, copied the sounds I wanted into my C:\windows\media folder, then uninstalled the aol. If you still have trouble after this, email me.

"gotmail.wav" and other AOL50 default sound wav files reside in the AmericaOnline folder. From the control panel browse that folder and choose the correct file name.

Make sure you still have the file by using:
Start/Find/FilesorFolders
Type: gotmail.wav
Maybe it was moved. If the file is gone, instead of reinstalling AOL, you could try getting it from downloading sounds off the buddy list.
Setup/BuddyList Prefs/Go to sound library.

Also -
In the AOL Menu go to
My AOL/Preferences/General
and make sure your sounds are "Enabled"
