Should I install Windows 7 x86 or x64 on a system with 2GB of RAM? Why does the x64 require 2GB while x86 can get by with 1GB?
Thanks

For the most part a 64 bit word (as in 64 bit os) uses twice the space as a 32 bit word. (as in 32 bit OS).

Unless you have a special application or a reason to use more than 2 G then 64 bit is a waste. Almost no applications supports the higher potential memory yet.

If your machine is x64 capable & ready, I would suggest installing the 64-Bit version of Windows 7. Regarding the x86 vs x64 suggested memory disparity, look at this thread.

I would say that you can easily test this.

Install your 64 bit os and load up some common programs. Look at task manager for the memory use.

Load up the 32 bit and do the same.

I'd try to remember tonight to look at two identical virtual machines I have up and compare the memory under some few applications.

My guess would be that Windows 7 64 bit can't use partial 32 bit like z/OS and there will be about 60%- 90% more memory used.

When it comes down to it your 1G is about the smallest you can use on 32 bit.

Then we are also in question of do you fully have 64 bit drivers that are native 64 bit? Could use the tool to help on that.

Also do you have any legacy applications that are not supported easily in 64 bit?

Retail Win7 Upgrade box comes with TWO DVDs - one for 32-bit (x86) and the other 64-bit (x64).

You're welcome. By the way what do you have running on the PC? If nothing now, don't buy the Upgrade version to get a full installation. Otherwise you are a pirate in the eyes of M$. Read their post HERE.

Hehehe. Pretty little icons show how to upgrade.

I didn't even open the boxes yet. I somehow thought that both were on the same disk unlike Vista's dual disks. Guess I will have to do that also.

Don't bother with 64 bit, if your system is not able to use it to advantage, which is the case, cause you are running 2 Gig only.
