I downloaded Windows7 free beta. It downloaded as an ISO file. I then downloaded ISO Buster per Download.com's instructions. I want to burn Windows7 to a DVD but can't figure out how to do so. TIA

Do you have Nero or Roxio burning software installed? If so, all you need to do is open them and choose to record disk from image. The exact language may be different in each version. If you have these burning utilities you don't need ISO buster at all.

Nero & Roxio burners are expensive. If you are tight on money as many of us are in this recession, get the freeware Active ISO Burner from HERE.

If your PC can boot to USB thumb drive, you can use the following command to copy Win7.iso image file to the USB drive and boot to it. This way you do not need a blank DVD disk and image burning software:

xcopy C:\Win7.iso /e /f x:\

where C:\ is the drive on which Win7 image file ( I called it Win7.iso ) exists and x:\ is your USB thumb drive letter.

Hope the above helps.

I stated the IF you have one of those burning programs you could use it. Having a DVDR is preferable to the thumb drive.

I wouldn't go out and buy either program just for that reason.

Get this program. http://portableapps.com/apps/utilit...

Creates a DVD from the iso image. BURN at slowest speed. Seems W7 is very touchy about overburn.
The portablapp is free, easy, runs from a usb flash drive if you want.

"xcopy C:\Win7.iso /e /f x:\"

I'll have to try that. Didn't know an iso image would get expanded with xcopy. (otherwise the image would have to be bootable in a flash drive)

"Best Practices", Event viewer, host file, perfmon, antivirus, anti-spyware, Live CD's, backups, are in my top 10

Hello, Jefro;

xcopy does not expand anything. It just copies the file on to the flash drive. The switches /e and /f carries over the full names and attributes without truncation to the flash drive. It is the same as when you can boot to the .iso image file within a virtual machine.

Frankly, I have not tested this method myself but the suggestion comes from a well-known Windows guru.

why waste a dvd, you can just unpack the files to any partition except the one your installing win 7 on, then hit the setup, the rest is follow the very simple instructions, once you have installed win7 you can burn the dvd directly from win7...

Listen to the guys with the mount suggestion. There are many programs that will mount .iso images. Another one aside from the ones already suggested above is the free MagicDisc.

I second Sabertooth.

princecorum wrote you can just unpack the files

Enlight us - how do you unpack files from an ISO IMAGE file without first burning it?

I'm sure princecorum was implying the use of a program like IsoBuster or PowerIso or WINRAR to extract contents of the .iso image.

Nothing wrong with that, I just think it's better, easier & faster to just mount the image & install away.

I obviously made the mistake of assuming that anyone who is planning to install and "beta test" a new OS would have winzip/winrar or some other program capable of extracting files, (how can anyone get by for more a month with a computer without having such a program). However i appologise to the original poster for my assumption.
So Jacres38, download a copy of of winrar (its free for use, you just get a popup now and then) install winrar, then right click on the win7 iso, choose extract files, and direct the extracted files to a partion you are not going to install win 7 on, like the winxp partion.
once extracted open the folder, choose setup and click, follow the simple instructions for a new installation, choose a empty partion,(do not use the win xp partion).
if you only have one partion or one, either get a second drive, or create a new partion, there are many free partition creation programs available and im sure Xp-user can direct you to many posts where he has given his opinion of which are best ;-),
Once you have successfully installed win7, you can boot into it and create a win7 boot dvd directly from win7 without any added software, the help file "create bootable DVd"will give you very simple and clear instructions.

I hope this clears up any misconceptions or misinformation that i may have inadvertantly given you.

and i hope that you succeed without having to buy/learn too many new programs.
Once you have installed you will be surprised at how much you actually can do without installing new software...the help files are very good, you can learn lots from them. ;-) good luck with which ever path you choose.
