I am running Windows 7 Public Beta. Does anyone know the exact date it expires? Also, will the final version of 7 be out by this date so that I may upgrade to it without having to go back to Vista or XP?

This is a challenge posting by CNChallenger.

The Beta will stop working on August 1, 2009. To continue using your PC, please be prepared to reinstall a prior version of Windows or a subsequent release of Windows 7 before the expiration date. You won't be able to upgrade from the Beta to the final retail version of Windows 7.

To add to the above correct answer I would imagine if MSoft couldn't release a final version well before that date then they may decide to continue with the beta testing.

The form that would take may be more limited than the original beta release of 2.5 million licenses. In other words, they may cut you off anyway. I suggest you pay attention.

The intent of beta testing is not to use the OS as your primary rig but to play with it. Therefore Microsoft will have no qualms about shutting off the beta installs.

Update to the above question. Further reading indicates Microsoft is looking to launch in the 3rd quarter of 2009 or the 1st quarter of 2010.

The ability to download Windows 7 downloads ended on Feb. 10, 2009.

"You won't be able to upgrade from the Beta to the final retail version of Windows 7."

While it is arguably best to go with a fresh install, it is not true that you won't be able to upgrade directly from a Beta to the RC when it is available.

Well, here is another link from Microsoft stating that you won't be able to upgrade to the final.

That was the case, but not anymore apparently: The positive feedback from numerous & perhaps loyal beta testers running Windows 7 as their main or secondary OS all this time seem to have prompted the "pre-release check" hack that M$ has now alluded to in the Beta-to-RTM & RC-to-RTM upgrade steps ... see below:

1. Download the ISO as you did previously & burn the ISO to a DVD.

2. Copy the whole image to a storage location you wish to run the upgrade from (a bootable flash drive or a directory on any partition on the machine running the pre-release build).

3. Browse to the sources directory.

4. Open the file cversion.ini in a text editor like Notepad.

5. Modify the MinClient build number to a value lower than the down-level build. For example, change 7100 to 7000.

6. Save the file in place with the same name.

7. Run setup like you would normally from this modified copy of the image and the version check will be bypassed.

The full version is to be released for businesses in lat 2009, a for home users in early 2010. The release candidate (RC) is already out . Your problem is that (as others have stated already) you cannot upgrade from the beta to the final version.

You best bet would be to do clean install and use XP or Vista until the final version is released in late09/Jan10.

OtheHill plainly stated Final Retail version, he was not talking about the release candidate, when referring to upgrading W7.
So his statement was correct.
