I was looking at Best Buy's ad this weekend and they have the Windows 7 Home Edition for $49 (available in October). My question is, will I have to have a copy of Vista to use this upgrade or can it be a new clean install? I can't seem to find out on the web.

Although, the upgrade version is not meant for new installs, you should be able to use it for a full install.

# Running Windows Vista?
# If you have Windows Vista, you can purchase Windows 7 Upgrade versions. You can do a clean install (back up your files, clean install, and reinstall your applications) or an in -place upgrade (Windows 7 installs over Windows Vista).
# Running Earlier Versions?
# If you have Windows XP or Windows 2000, you can purchase Windows 7 Upgrade versions. But you must back up your files, clean install, and reinstall your applications.
"Best Practices", Event viewer, host file, perfmon, antivirus, anti-spyware, Live CD's, backups, are in my top 10

I was reading that you will get a "golden ticket" upgrade if you buy a Computer from now until it's release that will allow you to go on Microsofts website and download the Windows 7 full edtion upgrade disc when it is released and Microsoft will also send you a hard disc copy of Windows 7 full edition upgrade as well.
Iron Sharpens Iron.

I haven't bought anything upgrade from MS since Win98 and Office 97. Back in those days the upgrade simply would not install without supplying proof of ownership of a qualifying product.
However, the old qualifying product was still usable on a different computer. That may have been against the EULA but was possible.
Nowadays things are different. My question is this. Will installing Windows7 upgrade version nullify the install key for the qualifying product (WinXP/Vista)? Anyone know from say a Vista upgrade?

The Vista install is a one shot deal as I recall. XP was the last move it all you want.

I am still finding things on my install of windows 7. The latest is email.
My question is: I have had my bellsouth.net email address for a long time but after looking into windows 7 I see that it only has windows live mail. I could not find a way to use my old email address. Will I have to change email addresses to use windows 7?
I did call Microsoft but I don't think the guy knew what I was talking about. I know some of you can tell me all about email so, hence here I am, lay it on me.
What makes it tough, I will have to see if I can cancel my preorder for windows 7 if this email thing don't work out.

Microsoft backed off on that on install BS right away after catching much flack. I have not run Vista so I can't say but in case you didn't realize it, WinXP was supposed to be a One Shot deal too. MS never enforced it. I don't think they do with Vista either. If someone knows better let us hear.

You can install the Windows 7 upgrade clean or over the top with Vista. Must do a clean install with WinXP. Either is good as a qualifying OS.
You just need to supply a disk.
If you have a computer with a pre-installed OS I don't think those qualify.
BTW, you can pre-order directly from MSoft.

What email client were you using before? Outlook/Outlook Express or something else. You need to have an email client on your machine to access your POP email account.

I apologize for not telling what client I use but it is Outlook Express of which I really like and would like to keep but windows 7 would not load it. I could use Bellsouth's Webmail but despise it. Why they left out OE with so many that uses it is beyond me. They could have upgraded it a little and left it in.

M$ replaced Outlook Express with Windows Live Mail a while back. You can download it here or if you have the M$ office suite installed, you can use Outlook as your email client.

Well, I will just keep XP for now. I called and canceled my preorder for windows 7 professional. Maybe there will be an upgrade with OE later on.
Thanks for all the info.

There isn't going to be an upgrade with OE. As I stated in my last response, it's officially been abandonware for many months & it's not going to come back, sorry! As for canceling your Windows 7 pre-order, I can only hope that you don't regret the savings opportunity.
Good luck.

If you really need an email client check out thunderbird at mozilla.org.
