Windows 7 hangs

August 29, 2010 at 13:20:09
Specs: Windows 7 64bit Enterprise Edition, Intel E8500 cpu, 4 Gb ram

My computer running windows 7 stopped booting. It hung at the windows logo screen. I tried to repair it by booting with the install disk but the tool was unable to repair it. I have tried to install a new sata disk and put a fresh install onto the new disk. The install fails. I have even tried to install Windows XP but again the install fails. Now windows will not even recognise the new disk. Bios recognises it but windows does not.

I had thought this possibly a hardware error but my bios POST message is saying everything is ok. I changed graphics cards but still the problem exists. I also removed any other cards attached to the motherboard but still no change.

I have tried a bios reset but this has not worked.

At the minute, I have my original hard disk, I tried to install windows 7 again and the install seems to go ok. When it reboots the computer hangs after the bios loads. The screeen goes blank (black) with a flashing cursor in the top left and stays like that.

I'd really appreciate any suggestions anyone might have.

try running with only 1 stick of ram in each slot, this does happen if 1 stick has a problem.then try again with the other stick.
that your bios sees everything and that your drive loads windows upto the logo screen, and that you have tried other drives and installations, would also suggest a bad mem stick..
that your new drives fail when trying to install would also suggest a mem fail.

have you set the bios to default settings?
have you checked the cables to the drives? tried new cables/ports?
have you tried using a windows repair disk? it may be that your copy has a damaged file, unlikely but worth a try.

I tried booting with just one ram stick in and still hangs. I tried to boot with your recovery disk but the system was not able to automatically recover from its errors. Originally I had tried to restore to previous restore points but these also would hang.

Really not sure where to go from here, looks like I'm probably gonna have to leave it into a shop and get charged an arm and a leg.

Any last suggestions guys or any questions you could ask to clarify the errors better?

thanks for the help

if it is a system that came with win7 already installed, try a factory restore.
also try a disk check, download the disk tools from the manufacturer, and run then from a cd or floppy or usb, you will hav to change the boot options in the bios or press and f key when bios is starting to get boot options.

if your machine is still under warranty, take it back, if you built it from parts, rma the motherboard
