YMMV ... depending on your definition of difference.

The UI, for example, is strikingly similar. The same goes for the hardware requirements, despite the roughly 3-yr final release gap between the two. But, in terms of performance, Windows 7 clearly has the edge.

I'd say most systems will perform faster with W7 but not as fast as XP. The problem might be support for drivers and applications.

"Best Practices", Event viewer, host file, perfmon, antivirus, anti-spyware, Live CD's, backups, are in my top 10

You can't get much worse in terms of performance than Windows Vista. Windows 7 is supposed to fix Vista's short commings.

Vista is = to what Windows Millennium was. a failed interim OS before XP's release.

I consider Win 7 is smarter than Vista with regards to installation and hardware requirements.

As an example, I installed Win 7 on an old notebook with P3 850 MHz and 512 MB RAM and it performs with a performance level equal to, if not better than, Win XP on the same notebook ( Dual boot ).

Installation of Win 7 took about 35 minutes.

I could not find drivers for several hardware on the notebook ( network card, sound card, and fax-modem ) but I extracted the drivers from the Win XP installation for the same components and they were accepted and functioning.

Notebook model is Compaq Presario 1700EA that came with Windows ME preinstalled. Win XP was not in existence when I bought the notebook.

Windows 7 is what Windows Vista should have been. It's basicly a reworked version of Windows Vista. In terms of GUI there isn't much diff between the two at all, the only major diff is the Taskbar. Navigation wise it's basicly the same, with a few tweaks here or there. As for the system requirements, they are basicly the same. Windows 7 system requirements is what Windows Vista system requirements should have been.

jefro: Wrong! Windows 7 is capable of handling 128gb ram, XP can't without "hacking".

In terms of resource usage:
1) Vista
2) Windows 7
3) XP

But that's obvious;
New and improved existing functions will result in more resource usage BUT Windows 7 is able to handle 128GB ram and everything else will become bigger and better so that "difference" is not notable.

Also Windows XP is stuck at Directx 9 and Vista/Windows 7 use Directx 10/11 so the gaming/fps-comparance is bull.

I noticed the versioning which is unusual; Windows Vista is version 6 and Windows 7 is version 6.1...

I think Vista was a testbed for Windows 7.

One thing I have found with 7 compared to Vista is tolerance to 'incompatible' hardware. The compatibility function on 7 is very good. I have used it to install sound drivers designed for XP on an old IBM computer where even Vista drivers were not available. The drivers installed and worked without any issues.
I also have a Zen Xtra mp3 player, no way would this work on Vista without updating the players firmware to 'Play 4 Sure', which can only be done on XP SP2 with WMP 10 installed, any other version of WMP will cause failure of update rendering the player useless! However, using an older Zen driver using compatibility mode on 7 has allowed me to use the player on 7 just as I would with XP.
I've not yet tried to get my TV card to work on the RC beta, it blue screened the original beta but was flaky even on XP, so not in a hurry to try again!

Microsoft had promised that it would deliver an Operating System that would be much faster than Vista. And yes it did, when the beta version of 7 was released and was tested. Windows 7 contains very few startups process that loads very quickly. And in fact there are very few processes that run in the background.

Windows 7 is much better comparing to Windows Vista in all the terms. It works just great on my PC.

I've installed it one of my friend's notebook. He's a Compaq notebook (Intel Celeron 1.6GHz and 1.5GB of RAM). Windows Vista was very slow on his notebook. But, on his notebook Windows 7 works perfectly.

Also, Win7's taskbar is very nice.

Vista is already old. U need more modern system as Windows 7. It is really more user-centric. Did you see the taskbar?

It has big visual changes.
