My old laptop screen broke up (with XP),
bought a new laptop wit Windows 7.
Old laptop harddisk is now connected
to my new laptop as an external USB
harddisk. How can I get the old e-mails and contacts from my outlook express transferred to my new e-mail program?
Same thing with the Firefox bookmarks?

To get your contacts (address book) & old messages back, you need to import them from the old HDD that you now have hooked up externally via USB.

You need to find the applicable OE subfolders on the HDD, which by default should be should be located at the paths below:

For email message: It's C:\Documents & Settings\your USERNAME\Local Settings\Application Data\Identities\{your GUID number}\Microsoft\Outlook Express.

- Open Windows Live Mail & from the File menu, point to Import & click Messages.

- Click Microsoft OE 6 & Next (make sure Import mail from an OE6 store directory is selected) & hit OK.

- Now click Browse & navigate to the OE email message subfolder & click the folder once to select it & don't open the folder, just select it & click Next.

- To import all the folders, click All folders or Selected folders & select which message folders you want to import & Next, then hit Finish.

For the Address Book (.wab): It's C:\Documents & Settings\your USERNAME\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Address Book.

- Open Windows Live Mail & open Windows Live Contacts.

- Click the address book icon in the bottom left corner of Windows Live Mail's main window. Or simply press Ctrl+Shift+C to launch the Windows Live Contacts window.

- From the Windows Live Contacts window, click the Show Menu button & click Import: a submenu will expand, listing all the import formats for Windows Live Mail.

- Since you are choosing .wab, Select the format & navigate to the location of the .wab file for Windows Live Mail to complete the import process.

Thank you for really clear instructions how to do the transfer.
Unfortunately I still have a problem: When I follow the path E:\Documents and settings\My user name\Local settings....
There is no Local Settings!! Only Application Data,Bluetooth Software,Desktop,My Own Data (containing my own created files, like My Jokes, My letters etc..),Favorites,Startmenu, WINDOWS, ntuser file(DAT-File). That´s all what I have there??? oh, and I made sure I am on a correct HDD, It is named E.

Do you have any idea what to do next? Thank´s for taking your time to help me!

The folder is there, but hidden from Windows.

To view it, go into Folder Options: Open Windows Explorer, click Tools & click Folder options. Then click the View tab & under Hidden files and folders section, actuate the Show hidden files, folders and drives radio button. You also need to uncheck the Hide protected operating system files box & then click Apply & OK to exit.
