Solved text flickers when scrolling down slowly

December 19, 2012 at 07:31:06
Specs: Wiindows 7 Home Premium, 3.15 GHz/8 GB

When ever I go to a web site that has text, like a newspaper website, the text lines flicker when I slowly scroll down or up on the page. I tried adjusting the Clear Type under Display, but it does not make any difference. This started about a month ago and I can't relate it to anything I've done on my computer. What would cause this? I would appreciate some suggestions.. Thanks

A suggestion from another forum asked about Extensions and Add-ons. After eliminating extensions and Add-ons one at a time, it seems that an Add-on called Bing Search Bar, put my Firefox back like IE 9 in that my scroll bar was now scrolling 6 lines at a time, just like I set it in my mouse settings and the faster scroll was not showing the flicker in my text anymore. Mysteriously the Bing Search Bar did show up a few weeks ago on my Desktop. Not sure how that happened. It is about the same time I started noticing my flicker problem in scrolling text web pages. I will consider this problem SOLVED for now. Thanks to all who gave their suggestions and comments. Happy Holidays.

If you are using IE try Firefox (or whatever), just to see if it is a browser issue.

Could be mouse software corruption, or even the mouse itself.

Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanks

Thanks Derek for your reply. I went to IE 9 and it doesn't do it there because it scrolls in step form like I have set in mouse scroll settings. In my case it is set for 6 lines at a time. Yet, in Chrome or Firefox, I can scroll like a micrometer setting where I just touch the scroll wheel and it begins to flicker just prior to scrolling. Now, I do not understand why the initial setting of 6 lines at time doesn't apply for Firefox or Chrome. Am I missing something here?

Try it with the cursor arrow keys. If no problem that isolates the mouse. See if smooth scrolling is enabled in the various browsers. Update or reinstall the mouse drivers/firmware and the video drivers.

Thanks paul1149 for your reply. It works fine with the up & down arrow keys because it does it in step form. I have downloaded and installed the latest drivers for my Logitech mouse and no change. I just realized that scrolling here on this page does the same thing. Not sure if downloading and installing video drivers will work, but I'll go ahead and try that. Thanks.

I've seen the sort of flickering you describe on several different
computers with different operating systems over the years. I'd
guess that it is a video problem rather than a browser, mouse,
mouse driver, or operating system problem.

Well, I completely uninstalled my Nvidia drivers for my graphic card and then reinstalled a newly downloaded file from the website. No change in my problem. What I am wondering is why is it that in Firefox, my setting of 6 lines per scroll does not work. Instead, it is a very slow, smooth and gradual movement of my screen as oppose to the 6 lines per step in IE 9? Chrome does the same thing. I really don't know what else to look at.

I just tried the scroll button on this post using both Firefox and IE.

I am set to only 1 step but this is quite crisp in IE. In FF it was a smoother movement, almost masking the steps. [One step is OK for me because the mouse has an acceleration facility if you scroll fast].

It seems to me that there are browser differences coming in to play here, which confuse the issue.

I recall having to try different mouse software versions to get the scrolling to my liking on this computer. Is it the same with another mouse?

Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanks
