Comment:

hi.
i am using the x-fi xtreme pci-e connected to a kenwood krf-v5090d 100x5 reciever with an optic cable and i just bought klipsch quintet speaker set.
unfortunatly only the 2 front speakers and sub woofer work. for some reason when i test the speakers using the reciever self test or creative software tests ALL speakers work, they dont work hen i play music (using winamp) or watch movies.

You need to check the audio panel settings for both Creative & Windows' sound settings to be sure you don't the speakers settings configured incorrectly.

BTW, that was a quick move on the new sound card & speakers acquisition.

I've got bad news for you, the Creative X-Fi "Xtreme" does not support surround sound via optical or coax :-(

Coax = Coaxial digital cable.

I'm sure you've been around these -- RCA looking -- type of audio cables, as they are widely used when connecting "digitally" between compatible home audio & video components such as TVs, receivers & other home theater equipments.

You don't need to buy a coax cable if you've got an optical cable for digital signals, your problem is the card, was the ASUS Xonar not available where you're at?

i have seen several asus sound cards but they have been 3 times more expansive so i just went for good old creative... guess i was wrong.. but then again when i run tests with creative software to test things like supported freq etc it tests every speaker seperatly and they all work... so the card does work with all 5 speakers.. the problem must be somewhere else

I dunno about that...

The speakers are fine & the sound card is fine. But you are missing the point. When using optical output, the sound card does NOT support 5.1 digital surround, only stereo. Although, I haven't followed Creative much since I involuntarily got rid of my Audigy a couple of years ago, but my understanding is: you only get digital surround with the X-Fi if the sound is DDL encoded to begin with.

You could try modded drivers/app for your card (links below) to see if it works, but YMMV & it may or may not work.

Getting optical surround to work with DVD decoding shouldn't surprise you, as I stated in my last response: you'd get digital surround if the sound is Dolby Digital Live encoded ... otherwise the digital output is going to be stereo only.

i understand that.. but i find it hard to believe that none of my music players can produce surround... i play the same music files using an mp3 player and i DO get surround... why dont i get it using my computer... the reciever has no problem the connections and soundcard are ok and the speakers are defenetly fine..

Your optimism is admirable doron, but you aren't going to get a hail mary pass on this issue ... see response #9.
