Hey guys, I'm after some info. I'm trying to add some autoplay options to my pen drive and hard drive so that when autoplay option comes up on my Windows 7 computers. I get the option to run An application called PortaMenu from either the hard drives or Pen drives.

I have tried the standard action, open, shellececute etc in autorun.inf and I just can't get any of them to prive the new options in autoplay, i just get the standard mixed media content responses to play, copy, open folder etc.

I have tried applying an icon to the drive with the same method and it works, but I can't get anything to add to the autoplay menu.

Any ideas appreciated, I know about the autorun limitations in the new versions of windows but this is unrelated. I don't want them to autorun, i just want them as options in autoplay.

If the drive type is important let me know how i can find out the type of each, or how i can change the behaviour in my OS for those drive types.

Thanks

I think the stinkers at MS locked it down by default. I forget where the permissions are for that. Might be local policy.

As a side note you should make a folder (hidden or not) that is called autorun.inf on all your USB drives to protect against the huge number of virus's that transmit that way.

Could be very wrong on that too.

"Best Practices", Event viewer, host file, perfmon, antivirus, anti-spyware, Live CD's, backups, are in my top 10

Surely we can still autoplay somehow, even if it's not enabled by default? I can understand why autorun doesn't work but no reason to stop autoplay options being added from autorun.inf on the media.

We're not all retarded enough to get so disasterously infected without knowing about it and how to solve it.

I don't know about the rtm but one of the releases I thought could allow it. It was on a technet page I thought. As I said I could be wrong.

The point is you should disable it, You shouldn't assume anyone else changed to allow it. Put an autorun.inf folder on your usb drives right now. Until the goofy linux virus makers and MS haters stop making virus's there will be no peace for the Windows users.

Why can't we all get along?

Placing an autorun.inf won't help, at least not as far as I'm aware. Sure, you'll get the autoplay menu, but you'll still have to manually execute your desired app. And I agree, the trade off to being secure here is a pain in the butt, especially for people with things like PortableApps.

I meant to use an autorun.inf Folder on all usb drives to protect against autorun.inf Files that are really virus based.

So it's inpossible to get any program added now even into the autoplay menu? Even that would be acceptable. The way it is, i have to physically browse the drive and execute the application i want.
