In another forum I asked whether the official release version of Windows 7 would overwrite the RC version I am using. I am giving it a pretty good workout and it would be good if this was so. The reply I got said that I would have to clean install the release version but the magazine I have been reading (about 7) gives the indication that the RC version can be overwritten thus saving a devil of a lot of work when it is released here in October. Is this so?

Microsoft state, and this was made clear when RC was offered FREE, that a Clean Install would be required...

The above is not quite true. And the magazine you read that gave an indication that the RC version can be overwritten (sic) in-place ungraded to save a lot of work is correct.
I've clarified this a few times on here & don't mind doing it again:
It is true that M$ recommend & prefer that "Beta Testers" rebuild their "test" machines running Pre-RTM builds of Windows 7 to the final version when it's released by doing a clean install. However, the Beta-to-RTM & RC-to-RTM clean install -- which isn't really a bad idea -- is NOT a mandated upgrade requirement. This is because there is a "pre-release check" bypass for people that really need to do an in-place upgrade rather than a full install & it is suggested that users backup as a precaution before running the in-place upgrade.
To bypass the RC-to-RTM "pre-release check" in order to run an in-place upgrade, all you need to do is: slightly modify the "cversion.ini" within the sources directory on the Windows 7 (ISO) image .... see below.
- Navigate to where your Win 7 ISO is located on your PC.
- Extract the files in the ISO with an ISO editor (e.g UltraISO)
- Navigate to the “sources” directory
- Open "cversion.ini" with notepad or another text editor
- Change the "MinClient" number from “7***.*” to “7100.0” ... see below for example
[HostBuild]
MinClient=7100.0
MinServer=7100.0- Save your changes to the ISO, burn it to a DVD & run or mount & run setup as normal & proceed with your in-place upgrade without qualms.
Good luck!

Thank you Sabertooth... this will be an interesting bit of homework. I'll report back with the results (after the Australian release in October).
