Try a manual Windows Update. If it still fails, there are options for diagnosing the problem right on the window that tells you that it failed. It of course goes through the simpler ones first, but if they fail, it offers you other options. Be persistent (once I had one machine that refused sp1 for quite a while, eventually, I found an option there to reinstall the entire updater and that fixed it). You have to be a little bit crazy to keep you from going insane.
