is this a windows 7 upgrade or did it come pre-installed?
You also didn't say the brand of your Laptop. If it is an upgrade or fresh install of windows 7, then go to the laptop website and download the latest driver (from the OLD operating system) to your desktop. Then right click on install as administrator and see if that works. If not, then right click on it once again and click on compatability mode, it will start up and then you can try to install the drivers again. It should work this time.
If windows 7 came on your PC, then tap f8 on bootup and then click on Repair my Computer

Their one setting that won't take long to check in the
Control Panel - Realtek HD Audio Manager - At the top
see if the Tab has a gold check mark for Speakers.
If not click it and go to the right and click - Set Default device.
If it's set on Digital Output it will stop the sound on my W-7
