Your D drive letter was for a partition on your hard drive.

Go to Windows Disk Management and list everything you see there.

Explain HOW you formatted.

if you had a C: and a D:, and it was on an acer i suggest that you have proably deleted the D; drive which would have housed the recovery program or you had the disk partitioned to use D; as a 2nd partition.

if you formatted the whole and then installed your OS from a dvd, you will have deleted the partitions in the format process,
you may then right click on my computer icon, choose manage/disk manager/right click on C; and choose shrink, then decide how small large you want the new D; partition to be, click shrink ok, yjem right click on the new area, create partition, give it a letter and a name.this video will help a lot.
