laptop; vertical lines, screen goes blank

Specs: Windows 7
I have a gateway m2624u series. It started these vertical lines, then the screen would go to dark gray; and then it would freeze. I would have to turn off and on again a couple of times for it to get going again. I had Windows Vista; thought I might have a bug couldnt get off; so crashed the computer; with no back up disk; put windows 7 on it now. It didnt help the problem; now I just get different black out screens, white and some yellow with green stripes. I have tried so many things; even what they call the Nanor Fix.

sounds like a possible hardware failure.
1st, open the small covers on the underside and remove then replace the memory modules, they may have become loose, try one module at a time if you have more than one.
2nd, if its still under warranty return it.
3rd, if its not warranty, and you feel brave, you should attempt to take it apart and reset all connections to make sure thay are not loose, you may even find a video on youtube to show you how to do this on your model, its not really difficult, HOWEVER, save all your files, because its always possible to brick your machine.
4th, take it to a repair shop and be prepared for high costs.

i hate computers!
but cant help myself....

I will try and do that tom; when I might feel braver. I dont really trust computer stores; they replace things that doesnt need to be replaced. Thanks for offering the help. I will let you know what happens if I get brave enough.

The symptoms with vertical lines (green, red or blue) usually relate to the LCD panel failing.

There are sites that have screens for the system at reasonable prices compared to what LCD panels used to cost. Some of the sites even have tutorials on replacing the panel. Since the parts are fragile extreme care is needed to do a tear down without damaging the plastic parts.

As for the repair shops check acquaintances for ones in your area that they have worked with. As the service manager for a repair center we do repairs and the only parts that are replaced are ones that have failed. Not all shops are out to take the customer for all they can get.

Thanks for the info. Right now the stripes have stopped. It just flashes, black verticle lines going up and down. My computer just actually stayed up for about 4 hrs tonight. It appears right now; like the more tabs i have up; which is usually 3 it seems to get warmer quicker and then the screen just goes blank and freezes; so i have to reboot. It is a pain. You can hear the fan more and more with the more tabs you have opened.

I removed the bottom piece where the memory was tonight..Removed the memory; replaced it. I blew all out real good. It stayed up for about 4 hrs tonite. I finally got 3 tabs opened and then you can hear the fan more and it seemed to get hotter. When there is only one tab opened it doesnt seem to get as loud; nor as warm. After about 4 hrs. the screen went totally blank; and froze again; so i had to shut down and reboot. My battery is saying you may need to replace it. I have tried it with and w/out the battery and it doesnt seem to have changed it at all. Do you have any other suggestions. You Tube had nothing on my computer. I feel like I am getting somwhere with it finally; needs more though. Thanks for the help
