Install HP OEM Win 7 on a Dell?

March 29, 2010 at 19:33:48
Specs: Windows XP
I have recently acquired a HP laptop with XP
Professional loaded onto. However, along with
the laptop came a Windows 7 Professional
Edition OEM for HP. Since I don't wont it to go
to waste, I was wondering if I would be able to
install the software on my Dell desktop? I'm
not too concerned about legality, but rather
just want to know if it is PHYSICALLY
possible.

You may want to wait for others to confirm this, but from what I understand, HP OEM windows disks are HP hardware specific. They include hardware drivers for specifically HP customized hardware. I do not know if downloading all of your needed drivers to a USB stick in advance will help or not.

just give it a go, try on a second partition, if it works, then you can run it as your main OS...if it fails, well you have lost 30 mins..

The Windows 7 Professional Edition OEM disc is not specific to HP machines. It only says HP on it because the machine it came with is propietary. The disc contains the same image as any Windows OEM disc. Recovery discs on the other hand are usually exclusive to the manufacturer/model of the machine generated for.

it wont let you activate because the SLIC and Certificate are not available to provide authentication that the machine is eligable to use the OEM key.

you could just install the correct slic and cert..but thats illegal, or you could use a new key which you can get from MS...
