In IE8, when I open a New Tab it is supposed to show the New Tab Page, which it was doing up until yesterday. Suddenly when I open a new tab it goes to a Google search page! what's up with that? How do I fix it? TIA

you may want to 1st try tools/internet options/advanced and then reset internet explorer. Another thing you can try is a system restore back to when it worked properly.
If the 2 above don't do it then you probably have some spyware, malware, virus, etc problem and will have to remove them.
Some HELP in posting on Computing.net plus free progs and instructions Cheers
Check Tools>manage add-ons and see if you have a new google add-on that you inadvertently got. If so, just disable it. I prefer only letting java and acrobat reader operate as add-ons, but just check once in a while to see what you have there.
If you have Google's New Tab page showing when you open a new tab in IE, it shows screenshots of your most visited sites. To change back to the Microsoft New Tab Page, use the Google toolbar and click on the wrench icon. It opens the Toolbar Options control (Google's). At the bottom of the Search tab, click to enable/disable the 'Enable the Google New Tab Page'.
OR - click this link: http://www.google.com/support/toolb...
OR, just disable the Google toolbar. You have to be a little bit crazy to keep you from going insane.
There is no Google Toolbar Installed!!! When the "New Tab" button is clicked what should appear is the IE8 New Tab Page with the tab reading "New Tab". Instead what appeares is a white page and the only thing on the page is the Google Custom Search, nothing else. I've done a restore but it did not help. I've even deleted Google as a search engine but that didn't help either. I've almost run out of ideas!

There is always a solution. System Restore may be good for restoring system files but not for user-specific settings. Open Internet Options in Control Panel. Internet Options will open to the General tab. There you will see several sections like Start page, Browsing History, Tabs, etc. Click Settings in the Tabs section. On the page that opens, you will see a drop-down box. In this box, you can select/define how opening a new tab must behave, ie. open new tab, blank page, or start page.
Hope the above helps.

( Sorry I use localized-language version of Windows, therefore some of the descriptions may not reflect what you may see when you open Internet Options. But you can find your way. )
CoolGuy
did you RESET internet explorer like I mentioned in response 1? Some HELP in posting on Computing.net plus free progs and instructions Cheers
Cool Guy: It has ALWAYS been set to the New Tab Page. That has not changed. What has changed is the contents of the New tab page, or so it seems. Here is the URL where the page opens now: http://gg.blogpear.com/vscript/newT...
This is the URL of where it should open up:
res://ieframe.dll/tabswelcome.htm
How do I get it to open up were it should???
XpUser4Real:
Yes. Twice. No effect.
Software gives me a headache.
Open Regedit and go to HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\AboutURLs
on the right pane check the value of Tabs and change it to
res://ieframe.dll/tabswelcome.htm
and to HKLM\Software\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\AboutURLs
if you are using 64-bit Windows, and check and change the value of Tabs to above.
Hope this helps.
