How to lock icon postions on Desktop?

December 13, 2012 at 17:11:39
Specs: Windows 7, i7 / 16Gb

IE 9 is a pain in the butt. Zoom level cannot be set at anything other than 100%. ie if set at 150% each new window reverts to 100%!!!

Similarly, the desktop icons persist with re-arranging themselves without my permission.

Why is that MS cannot provide a simple switch - to lock or unlock the desktop icon positions similar to the TASKBAR is seriously lacking.

Similarly, why cannot MS have all desktop setting accessible from one window rather than having to trawl through various dungeons and dragons to find anything vaguely useful. MS products persist with being clunky and lacking intuitive feeling.

In Win7, right-click on the desktop and select view, then make sure auto-arrange is off.

If it is not down to auto-arrange then there are various freebies around in Google to save and restore the desktop icon layout, such as this:

I can't vouch for that one (although an earlier version for XP was fine). From the comments it seems to work for some but not others and it might depend on whether you are 32 or 64 bit.

Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanks
