I have ordered my upgrade for
windows 7, but i feel i may have
made a mistake. I have read that if i
install windows 7, it is going to ask me
for my XP keys. If i install it using
those XP keys, will my XP keys be
killed?

And if that is the case... if i DONT like
windows 7, and then go back to the
mirror image copy of XP that i have
on another drive, will my XP keys on
that mirror backup be any good
anymore?

It's quite confusing!

To be safe, make a ntbackup of your system along with system state. You may have to use your cd or someone elses to install ntbackup.

"Best Practices", Event viewer, host file, perfmon, antivirus, anti-spyware, Live CD's, backups, are in my top 10

I received a reply from MS, and thought I would share it with anyone else who
might have had the same concerns as I did:

"I understand that you would like to know that after installing upgrade copy of
Windows 7 on Windows XP would product key for Windows XP be valid, Yes, the
product key for Windows XP would be valid.""

However the purpose of an upgrade copy is to provide the new OS on top of the older one. This does not mean that you can install Windows 7 and then install XP on another system with the XP key. What process were you planning that you are concerned if the XP key is dead or not?

Just so you know, only Vista supports an in-place upgrade. To install Win 7 on an XP system using the upgrade disc, you'll have to wipe the drive 1st, then during the Win 7 installation, you'll have to show proof of ownership of the qualifying OS (XP).

And as far as I can tell from the M$ reply in response #3, the XP product key remains valid so you should still be able to install XP on another system using the still valid key.

but i feel i may have made a mistake

Most likely you did. If your copy of Windows came preinstalled on your Dell Dimension 2400, you do not qualify for the upgrade described in Post 5 above. The Dell XP CDs is not a full-installation CD which in turn would have qualified you for Win7 Upgrade.
