I just bought a brand new Gateway computer. Directx 11 is installed already but a game I play will only run on Directx 8.1 is there a way to downgrade it? I really want to play my game.

Directx 11 is the default version for Win7. It cannot be downgraded. Try to run the game in compatibility mode. If it doesn't work, check with the developer or buy games designed for Win7.

The people at FFXI need to make a patch or something so it will run on any Directx.... I've been playing for 5 years... this sucks.

you can install an older version of DirectX alongside on Vista and WIndows 7, i have installed Direct X 9 for backwards compatibility

if you can do it for 9.0 you can do it with 8.1 the issues would be if you are using a new computer within the last 2 yrs your computer would be 2 good to run anything that required DX8.1 and thus it wouldn't work. i've had hundreds of game si've had to throw out over the years cause subsequent upgrading of a system made the games nolonger compatible

D9.0c compatible games will work

and D11 is just DX10 with a slight update

Any DirectX version will only activate if your graphics card can handle it.

so you could have a system with DX10 but if your Graphics card doen't support the hardware functions it will only run in DX9 mode anyway

anygame older than 3yrs forget about it. Too much changes in the system hardares and windows code so said games can nolonger access the functions and windows locations that seek

as for developers making patches so they'll run on every DX version, that'd be very time consuimng and why would they bother with a game that noone has payed for in 5yrs.

Each DX version 8,9,10 are farily different and utilise completely different hardware abilities that have been redesigned and thus are uinlikely to be backwards compatible though there are workarounds but they are haphazard at best
