Solved folders turn into shortcuts

January 31, 2012 at 00:39:46
Specs: Windows 7 64bit sp1

windows 7
service pack 1 updated/installed
language - NL(dutch)

any usb drive inserted into the computer will get its folders changed into shortcuts,
when inserted in another computer, the maps still are shortcuts, files still probably still exist,
files in root not damaged, or changed.
files in lost maps/folders are retrieveable by recovery software on another computer.
is this a virus, is something broke?
please answer as detailed as possible,

for now i place all files in the usb-drive root to still be able to use the usb.

Try using a different (new) USB drive. If that works okay, throw existing one away.

✔ Best Answer

1- Make sure that you are actually copying the original files to the USB drive and not the desktop or search shortcut for it.
2- Scan the system and the USB drive with Malwarebytes for possible infection.
3- As long as you still have copies of the files on it, delete ALL files and folders on the USB drive, create new folder(s) and resave the files to it (assuming it is a Flash Drive, if it is a USB Hard Drive then consider formatting it).
4- As above, if it still does not work but another does, consider replacing it.

You have to be a little bit crazy to keep you from going insane.

they are not hidden, the files where in maps to make it organised like everyone else,
then the computer turned the maps into sortcuts and made the files unreachable.
example:
usb has letter F:/
mapname: schooldata
before:
F:/schooldata/
after
shortcut - F:/[random number]/schooldata
about the random number, i think it is the sector number for the map...
perhaps i should have mentioned it earlier...

thanks for all you replies, i really appreciate it:)
