Comment:

I have purchased windows 7 and planning to triple boot with windows xp.
My question is:
I have win 2000 on C, win xp on d and e.
I would like to install win 7 on c where the win 2000 is at present. I know that c carrys many of the boot files for the xp and was wondering how they are treated when I try to load win 7 on c? Will it check the two xp partitions and keep them intact?
If I remember some of the older ver of win had to be installed in order of which one was newest. I hope that is not the case with win 7.
Any info will be appreciated.

Your D: & E: should stay intact since they are two independent partitions from C: which will become your Windows 7 partition. It's a fairly simple process if you do the necessary prep work.

- Make sure your C: partition is big enough to host Windows 7 before you embark on the installation.

- Save whatever data you want to keep from the Win2K partition if you have any.

- While you are booted into one of your XP installations, delete the Win2K partition & recreate it. And designate the refreshed Win2K partition as the install partition -- during Setup -- for Windows 7.

It's as easy as that.

sabertooth,
I thought that was going to be simple, but when I went into win xp under computer management it does not have an option to format or delete logical drive for c: (primary partition) only the other drives, c and d.
Am I missing somthing?

Depending on how your present dual-boot arrangement was initially setup -- if C: is the boot or system volume -- you may need to run the Windows 7 disc from outside of Windows & wipe the C: partition during Windows 7 installation. You would need to pay attention to the partition that is being wiped.

Ok, I have resolved my issue with duel booting windows 7 with windows xp.
All that was necessary was to load windows 7 on the c drive and afterwards adjust the bcdedit.exe file to make xp run when selected on the bootup screen. Everything was kept intact on e and f and running fine.
c:, of course was wiped clean by adding windows 7 which was ok.
Now I gotta learn how to use windows 7.
