desktop folders will not open

Specs: Windows XP
when I click on a folder I ger "this file does not have a program associated with it. Please install a program or create an association in default programs congtrol pannel". How do I do that? I can right click and select open and it will then open.

Bought and tried the software downlaod. Said I had 180 registry errors. Fixed them and did not solve the problem. Went back and downloaded two programs for two file extensions cmd and folder. Still have the problem. How do I know which file extension to select? When I right click on a folder on the desktop and open properties there is no extension shown. I'm lost.
