Changing 'Open With' to default for dll files

August 18, 2010 at 06:53:06
Specs: Windows 7

Hi there

I accidentally changed all . dll files on my PC to be associated with a program. Now their image is that of the program and I fear this is affecting how they function. As they are drivers I would be very grateful if someone could help me change them back to not be associated with this program.

I have tried right-clicking and selecting 'open with' but can't seem to find a default option.

Thanks.

Open a command prompt ( Win-Key + R ), type in cmd and click ok.
In this windows type in:
assoc .dll=dllfile

Then hit the enter key.

This should solve your problem.

Thanks very much. I'll take your word for it that that worked, because I didn't even know if it was a problem to begin with, maybe I'm just paranoid.

One thing is though, they do still show the program's image. Is that fine?

You may need to restart, so that the icons for dll files will change back to normal.

I fear this is affecting how they function.
If this is your concern, then don't worry. The underlying .dll system doesn't care what icon Explorer uses to represent them.
