Change window theme decoration in Windows 7 Aero

April 6, 2012 at 07:58:39
Specs: Win 7

The default Windows 7 Aero window metrics give fairly wide borders
around windows, to make the transparency visible. There is a pattern
overlaid on the border which includes a color transition on the sides,
30% of the way down from the top. I am constantly mistaking this
color transition for the vertical scroll slider. This is true even when
transparency is turned off-- the pattern is still visible.

I want to either get rid of the pattern or replace it with a different one.
At the same time I would like to be able to change other window
metrics such as border width and titlebar button style. I would like to
do this independantly of changing the other theme elements such as
desktop wallpaper. That is, I don't want to have to install a whole new
theme just to change a few window elements.

How can I do this?

You can change the size of the aero border by right-clicking the desktop, choose 'personalize' then at the bottom click on 'Windows color', click on 'advanced appearance settings' and under 'item', select 'border padding' - set this to zero and you should lose the border.

Thanks, John! I hadn't noticed that advanced settings link.

I'm pretty sure I don't want to reduce the border to zero size,
because then it would be impossible to grab with a mouse
click. Probably three pixels is wide enough to be able to
grab without making mouse pointer positioning excessively
difficult. At three pixels, that pattern might still be visible,
but it will be very narrow. Maybe I can find a setting to
eliminate the pattern. It would be nice if I could also replace
the titlebar buttons.

I was mistaken. I did notice that option previously.
The settings apply only if the Windows 7 Basic theme
or an Ease of Access theme is selected. Still, maybe I
can do something with one of those.

I can get it to work on any Win7 version, and if you take the tick out of the 'enable transparency' box you get rid of the problem with 'shadows' at the top as well.

A month later...

Contrary to what John said, disabling transparency does not
make the decoration on the widow borders go away.

If there is no way to change that without installing a new theme,
I will install a new theme.

Where can I download Aero themes which change more than just
the things I can change through the Personalization control panel
applet? I want one that doesn't have that thingy on the borders.

If I can't find a suitablle existing theme, where can I read how to
make my own?
