Can't access my network hard drive or outlook

March 23, 2010 at 08:55:14
Specs: Windows 7
I cannot access my network hard drive or my outlook in windows 7 on my HP computer. The other 2 computers using XP all work. I can get the internet on the new HP computer. I have disabled windows defender and firewalls. The ISP provider says the connection is correct and Belkin (router) says it is win 7 compatable. Any suggestions on what I should do? Thansk Brian

Control Panel > System and Security> System "See Name of this computer" > Change Settings.......... Change the name of your workgroup from "WORKGROUP" to what every you use. The old XP default was MSHOME. Restart and your done.

if it still fails try enable Network Discovery.
Click Start->Control Panel->Network and Sharing Center, click Change advanced sharing settings. Enable the option network discovery.

If I remember correctly, I had more trouble getting my XP machines to 'see' resources on my 7 machine than I had it seeing resources on my Xp machines. As soon as I made the change in the workgroup name so it were the same as the older computers, I was able to access shared resources on the XP machines. Now allowing access to windows 7 shared resources took a little more playing with.

are you trying to connect to a home network, via your home router? or to your work network? by the internet?

home, try to delete the current network connections and try rebuilding.

work, run the connect to a network, and choose the vpn (probably)

if you can connect to the internet, i see no reason that your outlook does not work, you may try to reinstall outlook, or do a repair of the office installation from within control panel/programs
it would also be a good idea to check your accounts are correctly setup within out look tools/account settings.

I went thru the account settings with the ISP and they said everything was good. Will try the re-install - it has me baffled as well.

Ensure that File and Printer Sharing Is Enabled
Turn on network discovery.
Verify that Everyone Is on the Same Workgroup
Turn on sharing so anyone with network access can read and write in the Public Folders.
If you don't want users on your network to have to enter password then click the button next to Turn off password protected sharing.

and dont use homegroup that only works with win 7 machines..
