Download AdwCleaner from this link:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/dow...
AdwCleaner Usage Instructions:
Using AdwCleaner is very simple. Simply download the program and run it. You will then be presented with a screen that contains a Search and Delete button. The Search button will cause AdwCleaner to search your computer for unwanted programs and then display a log showing the various files, folders, and registry entries used by these programs.
To delete these unwanted programs simply click on the Delete button, which will cause AdwCleaner to reboot your computer and remove the files and registry entries associated with the various adware that you are removing. On reboot, AdwCleaner will display a log showing the files, folders, and registry entries that were removed.

"ask was the stupid tagalong"

All you had to do was untick the box during the installation.

* Ask Toolbar can be is installed without any disclosure whatsoever and without any consent from the user whatsoever.
* It solicits installations via "deceptive door openers" that do not accurately describe the offer; failing to affirmatively show a license agreement; linking to a EULA via an off-screen link.

Java installer specifically has a little check box that if you are not paying attention, you fail to uncheck the "install Ask Toolbar" and you are zapped. You may be able to just uninstall it and then make sure that it is not on your add-on list on your browser. If it is still there, you can run Malwarebytes and remove all it finds and that should remove anything hidden. Or you can try the above suggestion, though i am not familiar with the program.

You have to be a little bit crazy to keep you from going insane.

Fingers,
AdwCleaner is a great tool and we use it a lot here, in the CN Security and Virus forum. As a lot of Toolbars will leave traces which are still active after uninstalling by normal methods. The AdwCleaner Tool removes the traces as well. And when run in conjunction with Junkware Removal Tool (JRT) not much gets left behind :)

AdwCleaner is at 04.30 in video
JRT is at 02:24 in video
Note: Both tools are free, and can be used by very basic skilled users. Try them out and let me know what you think?
