It's a bug that happens in maybe eighty percent of the installs..there's *no* way around it..i'm afraid..
It is, in fact , precisely because it's a beta, as you stated.
There is no full version, unfortunately. They stopped developement of the w31 microsoft media player halfway through..it was intended to be at least an AVI, wmv and MP3 player (and maybe more, i'm not sure)..but they stopped work on it before that ever came to pass...and it even comes with MP3 codecs, but they're entirely non-functional.
Eventually, they just activated the older Net-show codecs for it, so that's all it plays (the older asf, asx), but even if you could find any older netshow files out there (there's almost *none*)..it's much crashier than the earlier w31 netshow player 2.0 (where they sourced the codecs from).
It's got a really nice interface though!.
if someone wanted a challenge , and wanted to try activatng those MP3 codecs etc. i'm sure it could be done by an experienced programmer..the interface is already done...but nobody's gonna want to tnker around with any (even an older) MS program tho, especially for free :)
