Comment: I need a WfWG 3.11 bootdisk to FORMAT and FDISK my harddrive to install workgroups. It has to be the correct version, MS-DOS will not do. Come on you guys, get it right this time.

Reply: (edit)I almost did not reply to your message, as the tone of your message put me off! However, There is no such thing as a Windows for Workgroups 3.11 (or Windows 3.1)Bootdisk. You may come accross a disk marked as such, but it will still be a MS-DOS Bootdisk (More than likley a version of MS-DOS 6.x) Even Windows 95 & 98 Bootdisks are still DOS Based by the way. You need to install at least a minimum install of MS-DOS (6.22 recommended) before you can setup WfWG 3.11 As to where you get it, is up to you. Is that clear? or would you like someone else to tell you that yes a Windows Bootdisk does exsist, Its magic and does not use DOS. LOL

Reply: (edit)If you are going to install Windows 3.11, for sake of simplicity, do not use a DOS boot disk higher than 6.22 to fdisk and format the drive. Yes it can be done with a higher version, but it's just easier not to use a DOS 7 boot disk. Just download a MSDOS 6.22 bootdisk from somewhere (www.bootdisk.com) and fdisk the drive, then format it. Then install windows 3.11. If it does not work then YOU are doing something wrong or there is some other problem with your PC. Do not point the finger at us saying 'get it right this time', because MS-DOS will and does work. -Michael

Reply: (edit)I find you need a little more than just the basic MS-DOS 6.22 boot files, ensure that you transfer FORMAT onto your harddrive as well. No real need for FDISK after drive is up and running. Bootup your PC FDISK and FORMAT your harddrive. DO NOT use bootdisk as startup disk only, as WfWG will always want it that way, better to have a bootable harddrive. Unlike Windows 95/98 Windows 31/311 does not install its own version of DOS when setup. It will always use the version you install first. Now then - You get it right this time, Come back and say your sorry!

Reply: (edit)OK OK you win, Have found a MS-DOS 6.21 bootdisk and did as you say and it works fine. I did at one time have a startup disk labeled "Microsoft Windows for Workgroups - System Startup Diskette" I know feel that it was a DOS bootdisk after all! So - Sorry - I do feel small!

Reply: (edit)Say-y-y, any chance you could make me a copy of WFW3.11. I have an old Epson 486 with WFW3.11 installed (as well as DOS 5.0)and it loads so far, then stops and states "Progman.exe bad.." I have Win 3.0, 3.1, 3.11, 95a, 95b, 98, 98SE, but NO WFW 3.11. Let me know...Thanks.
