I was looking on Computing.net and just happend to look on the left side where all the Support Forums links are and I'm like, "WHAT? Windows 3.1??? Get out-a-here!" Is there really people out there still using Windows 3.x? Daag that brings Memories. I Still have one of those at workerd parked around somewhere with an "Abandoned Vehicle" sign stuck on it. LOL It's a 486 Packard Bell. I still have the software too which is even more crazy. I got Windos for Workgroups 3.11, DOS 6.??, and MS Works 4.0, And a Box with some Software that's been collecting dust I think since around What year was it Windows 95 came out??
You know what I'ma turn it on for old times sake. I hope nothing catches on fire when I turn it on after sitting that long.
WOW!!! I'm still in Ahww.

Yes, in fact, some people still use 14.4000 modems to log on to the internet too. Anyone who surfs computing.net on that category here?

I installed Win 3.11 on the PC in my sig to see what it was like using it, I installed it using MS Virtual Machine, I could never cope using it, installed it for 10 mins then deleted it lol, love looking at really old PC's though

Yes, some people still have Windows 3.1/WFW 3.11. I got WFW 3.11 on a removable hard drive, that I sometimes put back into this system for a "nostalgia fix" If you maintain a compatible video card, you can get it running even on fairly modern systems. "This system" is a Duron 800 overclocked to 1Ghz w/384meg RAM. I have Windows 3.11/DOS 6.2 rigged to on boot create a ramdisk, then as Windows 3.11 loads, it loads it's swapfile to the ramdisk. I can even surf the web on my DSL connection.

You know, what really surprises me is how soo many people think of W31 and WfW311 as so limited, with comments like "i can even surf the web', or "even play movies on it", or one of the most common "wow! i can get more than 16 colors!"...
Well, the internet didn't spring into being with the advent of Win95..nor did tcp-ip..but was already being accessed with early netscapes and mosaics, plusa whole bunch of not so great browsers too...it was the web that was really young..fact is there was little choice as to where to point your browser...that was the limitation in '94, not windows..
And of course W31 was able to display true color (given a decent videocard)....what about all the movie effects back then...although macs and suns did the lions share of the stuff, theres still quite a few CGI's that were processed on w31 PC's --remember the kind of effects around '94 like in outer limits , x-files etc..tho not anything like today's, they were sufficiently impressive to show the capabilities of the then hardware and software..
W31was capable of playing TV shows on the computer, various multimedia, and the list goes on and on.
No wonder people stil use it today.. it got the job done!

Exactly. I used to have an NT 3.51 setup with tons of stuff. Netscape 4.7, Paint Shop Pro, IE5, WMP 5.2 Beta and the list goes on. Sure, I couldnt do Win32's or play the fastest movies on it, but it did the job. (Did the job with a 1.6Ghz sitting next to it)

I also find it amasing that people even with newer PC still use even the smallest machines.. Take me for example, I still got a 486DX2/66 with 40M RAM, while also I got some Pentium II's and and AMD Duron.

I dont use Windows 3.11 anymore just becuase lack of machine, nor do I use NT 3.51(95 took in). Its all lack of machine. Im sure even if I DID have a machine slow enough for Windows 3.11, I'd probly do an PC-DOS/Linuc text mode dual boot.

Actually, w311 runs really, really well on P3's and such (haven't tried P4's)..and when i was running NT351 i found it could do most everything NT4 could do (given a few exceptions) plus it ran w31 apps better than NT4 (i expect the dos VM was more integrated in nt351 than NT4...just a guess tho...)

Nice to see so many old-time 3.1 users. Does anyone know where I can get a copy of Windows 3.1? I have an old 486/40 and my 6 year old neice wants to play with it. Can anyone help?!
