Comment:

Currently I am trying to replace original Windows 3.1x files with alternatives.

I am very very close to a FREE Windows distribution now.

In my search for replacement files I found this very interesting site about a Windows clone:

http://www.eoslx.net.ms/

Now I am going to replace some files (applications .exe and drivers .drv) to see if they work.
Does anyone here has tried this too?

N.B.: I am not using this clone as an OS.
I only want to replace applications (like control.exe, winver.exe, dosx.exe etc.) and drivers (like keyboard.drv). In this way the (Free) Windows version I have is not an emulation but the real thing! ;-)

You do realize that these files are copywrited by MS, and decompiation and editing, recopialation, and redistribution are prohibited by copywrite law. It would be wiser to not re-distribute the actual MS files, but write an equally functional program replacement.

To K_Semler:
These files ARE replacements!
Check the url for more info....

I have tested them on Windows 3.1x but only WINVER seems to work good enough.
NOTEPAD, CONTROL and WINHELP start up but donīt show the menuīs and are not useable (I guess).
NOTEPAD replacements are available elsewhere too, so thats not such a big loss.

WINIT doesnīt do anything it seems (it doesnīt harm too!;-)

Although WINMINE worked quite good on my Windows 98 machine it didnīt start on 3.1x.

To anyone whoīs interested:

I only need these ORIGINAL Windows 3.1 files (until now) to build a working Windows 3.1 version:

DOSX.EXE
MMSYSTEM.DLL
VTDAPI.386
WIN386.EXE
WINOA386.MOD
WINOLDAP.MOD
WSWAP.EXE

The rest of the files for a functional Windows 3.1x can be replaced or downloaded LEGALLY elsewhere....

I hope to find MMSYSTEM.DLL soon, because I think this one can be found in some other software. Please post here if you know what software comes with this file (or perhaps some other files in the list above)....
