There are two ways out of your predicament, one more expensive than the other

1) Buy an external CD Rom Drive, they shouldn't be expensive.
* Check to see if your laptop has a pcmcia card slot. Read your manuals for help to see if you have such a device. If you do, buy a cd rom drive which is pcmcia compatible
If you don't, then you have got to connect it via the parallel port.
This last option is a bit tricky, because this means you are going to require an installation disk.
Bug me by email and I'll send you a copy, remember you will need a parallel cable if you are going to use this method. If your laptop uses usb, and i strongly suspect it doesn't, then there wouldn't be any problem.
If you buy a cd rom drive for parallel, makes sure it will work on the parallel port, there must have a connection for it on the cd rom!!!!
That was the expensive option but really the best for so many things! Oh! Windows 95
Well if you get an external cd rom drive then of course you can buy copies of windows 95, should be much cheaper now! £60 to £70 ?

I'm getting this strange idea you don't want to spend this money, shame on you!!!

There is indeed a disk version of windows 95, but the disks are of a non standard size 1.87mb, they don't diskcopy to standard floppies, i've tried, it keeps saying the disk image doesn't match!

Right if you want, and i just bet you do, i'll email you a copy of win95 disk version.
Believe me though it isn't glamourous, it really is a cut down version of the full blown windows 95. You could have had windows updates free off the web, but i fancy not any more. Now email me at david.peacock@kcl.ac.uk
if you want me to send you the disks etc. I really would advise you strongly not to bother, but buy yourself an external cd rom drive, and buy the cd version, but if you insist....
I'll email them to you, but you will have to wait for me to have some spare time, basically what i can do is to zip the copies up, so that can download them onto floppy disks. You need to have a windows 95 startup disk, that is disk formatted in the windows 95 o/s using the dos command format a:/s
If you don't know of anyone who can do this, again i work some magic, and between us we can make a windows 95 system disk.

Oh dear bad news!
I've just read your original message again!
I am not sure, but i am reasonably sure, you can't put windows 95 on a 386.
By all means try, but i think not!
Oh dear, i am so sorry! What a waste of time!
I can't quite remember all the speccy stuff for win95, but it would only go on some 386's, those that have had a bios upgrade.
Basically, Windows 95 is a plug&play o/s, if your bios doesn't support it (and it may do!), then you can't install it.
To install windows 95, you require
200mb of free hard disk space! Has it got that much!
16mb of free Ram - Has it got this much
486 or 386 plug&play bios
Type mem at the dos prompt to find out how much ram/disk space is available!
You might be able to get a bios upgrade off the internet from the manufacturer of your computer's website.
I am really really sorry, i don't thinks its going to work!
The money you may have to spend on extra ram, may not be worth it. You may have to empty the laptop of everything that's on it.
Anyway, if you wish to proceed with installing win95 on the laptop, check out the disk space, if ok, check if the bios is plug&play, if you don't know, go to the manufacturer's website download a bios upgrade. If it isn't available, you can still try to install windows 95, but i doubt it will work.
In short i would reccommend you get another laptop, a spanking brand new baby laptop. I know you can't afford it! Neither can i, but certainly your old laptop has had it, i think!
I have win95 disk version if you want it, but you have a lot to do, keep me posted
If there are other problems let me know. I'd prefer you use my email address, its david.peacock@kcl.ac.uk.
I might visit this website address again, but i don't want to keep coming here. Help you, yes i don't mind, but hunting down this web page, please do me a favour.
I will check at least once more this week

i have a pc with a formatted hard drive that originally had windows 95 on it. its "recovery disc"(i hate those things) was on a cdrom. i cant find the driver for the cdrom and dont know how to get the cdrom working even if i did find the driver for it. what i do have is windows 95 upgrade from 3.1 on a set of floppies. i tried it. the first two disks are fine like its going to install it but then it searches for the previous version of windows. it doesnt have the previous version because the hard drive is formatted. what can i do? can i trick it? is there a file i can put in when it searches for the previous version? is there somewhere i can go to download 3.1 so i can upgrade with the windows 95 floppies? please please help me. i need to get this pc running so i dont have to sacrifice my nephew to the virus gods for downloading movies! thanks! :)

there are not too many sites left over with win 95 broken down into floppies. go to http://www.geocities.com/software1976/ and get the original version of w95 which can run perfectly on a 386 machine.

Hi all,

I too have become CRAZY in the last two weeks - with no less than FOUR - yes, F>O>U>R old computers I bought second hand on my front room floor having tried UNSUCCESSFULLY to get any one of them to be able to read from an EXTERNAL Philips CD re-writer vis the parallel port.
Yes I do have the correct cable for it -
yes I do have the "shuttle" what ever program to read the cable connection and
Yes I do have windows 3.11 installed on them from floppies.

All I want to do is - install windows ME from a CD I bought, using the EXTERNAL CDRW
but ...

I don't know how to do it and what programs i am missing???????

Please can ANYONE send me an email or a program or a link to a site with the answers written clearly and simply.

I really want to have a second internet computer (486DX) but I cannot get it to give the extern cdwr a drive letter like it does on my main comp (not for internet) when everytime i boot up windows Me - sure enough the little beauty gives the extern cdrw a seperate drive letter without any problems.

I have written many emails to various site webmasters but NONE have every answered me.

Please, guys help a poor moron once.

ps I blame microsoft for making working with computers to bloody easy with win95, 98 and ME. When it comes to the crunch I wish i had learnt to use a computer earlier when there was only the MS-DOS. Then, I might have had more chance of solving my own problem.
