Andy V & Stephan look in your e-mail! As far as 'Startup Disks' go, You need to install MS-DOS (6.22 is best) onto your computer before you can install Windows 3.1 - MS-DOS will make your computer bootable.

No such thing a Windows 3.1 Setup Disk! You need MS-DOS 6.x (6.22 is best) = 3 Disks and Windows 3.1x Disk Set = 6 or 7 Disks (Or 8 disks if Workgroups - Before you even say it!) You need to install MS-DOS first, Followed by Windows Install (Setup.exe is on Disk 1 of each disk set)

You will find windows 3.1 and dos at http://www.kewlone.com/ In order to download the files from this site you will need to sign up with, "Free Drive" this will allow you to download the shared files. (It is a free service) Click on the WIN B4 W95 icon or DOS B4 W95 icon. Use the Help Pages for information on using the downloaded files. The files will need to be unziped. You can use PKZIP to extract files directly to your floppy drive a: this will allow you to make a set of discs for windows 3.1 ( you will need 7 floppy discs)

I had formated my 486 and used a bootup disk I created in a Windows 98 system to boot the 486 system.I loaded win 3.11 on it.Now windows 3.11 does'nt boot and says I'm using the incorrect DOS version.Will a Win 3.11 startup disk solve the problem ? If so where do I get one ? Please Help.

Hi, I am trying to get my ol' faithful 80486 Siemens Nixdorf 4L working again. When I switch it on it goes through a load of tests A OK but then I get "Error initialising hard disk controller 0". Also, if I press F1 to continue, I get "Disk boot failure, Insert system disk & press enter" The Bios settings seem to be OK. Any ideas?
