Dear...
I have windows 3.11 (wfw) set up so that I can log onto my isp, however my version of Netscape does not seem to work. (This software was provided to me circa 1997 by my isp.) Is there a (free) software package available that I can use with windows 3.11 to dial into my isp, containing a minimal browser and mail package?
Thanks,
John

Yup, there sure is..unfortunately, only the cdrom versions of netscape come with a dialer..
Internet explorer 3.03 does come with a dialer, and it's actually pretty much the same one that is on the netscape cd's, by ShivaPPP
The general advice i've seen is to do a custom install and select just the dialer (if thats what you want) , but i've tried that, and several essential dialer files were missing..however,since your also looking for a mail client anyways, just install the whole IE303 package (i'ts about the same installed size as a netscape 3 install), and it has an internet mail component, the web browser , and the dialer. Even though the browser and mail client aren't nearly as good as netscape's, the dialer is superb, and much easier to setup and use than trumpet...
I'd recommend keeping the netscape install though, (provided it's at least 3, preferably 3.04), as it's going to be a lot faster , and more stable and covers more sites than IE303, as long as you disable JavaScript in network preferences (it'll crash netscape 3)..
The link for the IE3 browser is at lightspeed's page...

or if it's busy you can try pcfreak's site...

Thanks IBM Warpster, for the suggestion.
Dominicus - Yes that sounds like a good idea. You can see that I'm ram challenged, so this should do it.

Sorry, dominicus, but that's not quite accurate, as the Netscape I got from my ISP (at the time), including the dialer, came on diskettes. Also, the IE 3.03 I received didn't come with a dialer (later on, but same ISP, this time on a CD).

I have also had success with Trumpet Winsock. It's powerful and flexible.

Good luck.

well, thers only one version of win31 IE 3 that doesn't come with a dialer, and that's the minimum install version specifically for lans..(3.02, i think , and it has min in the name)

I should have said, re netscape, that only the commercial versions of netscape came with a dialer, as opposed to the freely distributed downloadable ones (netscape wasn't always free)..
If your isp had a commercial version, it would have had the netscape branded shivappp dialer...most ISP's included a dialer of some sort on the disks though, and you may have had a different one, i don't know...the netscape one installs at the same time as the browser install, and sets up the account before netscape's install closes.
That an isp would actually supply a copy of IE without a dialer is nuts, as the whole point of ISP's supplying software is so you can dial into their service....!
The link for IE i gave though does have a dialer...it's pretty tough to find the one without it (as i found out when trying to find it for an nt3 install, which fails if the dialer's included)

Always make sure you visit:

when networking Wfw or Win3x.

Thanks everyone,
I downloaded the 'made for WFW' version of IE3. I comes with dialer, and seems to work pretty well. The problem seems to be that I can't keep a connection. The general concensus seems to be that Netscape is the better browser, in combination with a separate dialer. (I'm not going to bother with mail.) That being the case, what are the suggestions for both Netscape and a dialer... remember that this is a ram and cpu challenged maching (486/4). (I'm trying to get more ram, but don't want to pay too much.)
Thanks,
John

Thanks SkipCox,
A quick visit to the site you recommended didn't reveal anything for win3.x. Is there anything there that I would have to dig for?
Thanks,
John

Dominicus -

Heck, maybe it was IE 3.02 (and not 3.03) that I had that didn't come with the dialer. It was years ago. I believe the reason they didn't provide a dialer was that it was more of a supplemental CD they sent out, and not one to initially connect to their ISP.

Also, sorry for being so critical (Netscape w/dialer coming on diskettes, as well as CDs), but I couldn't help myself. :-)

John -

You might want to try this dialer. As far as Netscape browsers are concerned, here you will find some. Since you have RAM issues (lack thereof), you may want to use version 3, but make sure you turn off Javascript.

Good luck.

John,

Seems like each time I network wfw I need to visit wown. In a nutshell, I install wfw3.11, win32s and IE3.03 without the dialer. Last time around installing all from a fresh format took about 35 minutes and when I made my network connection, I was also able to jump on cable internet. Seems like I remember pretty detailed instructions on wown.com. I'll look in a bit and post back.

There are some versions of IE 3.03 that didn't come with a dialer, actually... (Minimum and Browser/Mail, from here) Also, I actually still have a copy of 3.02 with dialer and mail that I got from my old ISP, back when they were Prodigy Internet. As far as I know, there were dialer and non-dialer versions of 3.02, 3.03, and 3.03 SP1, and I think earlier 3.0x versions as well...

To all,
I want to thank those who helped me to get this thing going. I eventually removed Netscape and internet explorer, and installed opera 3.62, in combination with Trumpet winsock. (I had to modify winsock's ini, but it works fine.) Opera is slow but not as slow as IE3. I also added Foxmail, which is pretty good.
This was just an experiment to see if I could get it going, and I did, albeit slowly. (I wouldn't want to do any serious surfing with it though.)
Thank again to everyone,
John
